A follow up.
The problem was a shagged ball joint on the rod that has the steering damper connected (the name escapes me temporarily), which subsequently resulted in a loose nut.

 drag link (or drop arm).
The drag link is the long rod that has the ball joint ends(tie rod ends) and the damper is hooked up to one end of the tube.
drop arm is the bent arm bolted to the bottom of the steering box that has an eye where one tie rod end is bolted to it ... the other tie rod end is connected to the steering knuckle, passengers side.
if you greased it, did it have a grease nipple? or did you somehow manage to get grease into it without a grease nipple.
If the tie rod end has a grease nipple, it'll be an aftermarket end. Original ends(Lemforder brand) are sealed, no nipple, can't be greased .. I'm told don't need it.
We recently did my brother's D2. he asked me to order the parts for him as he was busy working .. so I did.
My landrover 'experience' is RRC and D1.
After ordering the tie rod ends, brother picked them up and called me to ask what I'd ordered!! they weren't the 4 small tie rod ends I explained to him, and wouldn't fit into his (motor)bike panniers!
After much to-ing and fro-ing of expletives over the phone with him, I told him to go back and ask for the details of the order.
(remembering I have D1 and RRC experience) turns out that two of the tie rod ends are fixed to the tubes(drag link and track rod). RRC and D1 have all separate parts, that is tubes are just tubes, and rod ends are separate items all round.
So be mindful that original equipment 'tie rod ends' aren't just tie rod ends on the drivers/RH side of the assemblies, but are part of the tubes themselves.
The two joint ends on the passengers side are just the tie rod ends(or ball joints).
So if it is a possibly worn tie rod end on the drag link, if it's the steering box end, then if you order original parts, it will be the end + tube.
If it's the ball joint at the wheel end of the drag link, you get the ball joint and connecting thread/collar piece.
I'm surprised that if the nut was loose at one of the ends, you didn't get a steering wobble all the time, or over imperfections in the road surface.
