    DIIA Spaghetti

    Hi All,

I'm trying to get my head around the pile of spilled spaghetti that is the DIIA (EU3) cooling system. From RAVE and various LR parts websites, I think I have identified the part numbers of all the hoses except a couple of small bore hoses.

Could "thems as knows these things" please have a look at my diagrams attached and see if I have the right part nos., please?

My top hoses had started to weep when it rubs through against the air-con compressor fitting (thnaks for the 'heads-up' on that one JC!), so I want to get a full set of new hoses and make sure the whole system is OK.

Is 8 or 10mm fuel hose (say, Mackay brand) OK for the small bore coolant hoses?

Ian, # 35 is definitely 8mm bore at the expansion tank end as I've just replaced it. I used a Dayco coolant hose.

    # 37 is 16mm at one end and 12mm at the EGR cooler.

The fix there is to **** the whole EGR system off, blank the hose that comes out of the oil cooler (passenger side of block) and blank the port in the expansion tank and use a 4 or 5mm (can't recall exactly) vacuum port blank on the vacuum pipe tee piece and fitting on the air box and get rid of the solenoids too.

That eliminates a whole lot of mess.

I've just been through this but still have a circuit from the oil cooler to the expansion tank.
A few of the boys here mentioned it wasn't needed, and after looking at the coolant flow through the block and cooler it isn't!

Now here's an interesting point. I was wondering about the wisdom of having a medium sized hose from the oil cooler to the EGR cooler and then restricting the flow with a thin tube back to the reservoir. So, would I be right in thinking that the main oil cooler flow comes from the engine/coolant pump, through the cooler core and than back into the engine cooant galleries? And that just a bit of the flow (presumbly from the 'cool' end) is tapped of to feed the EGR cooler? And, if so and EGR is removed, the oil cooler outlet can simply be blocked off? (along with the relevant reservoir spiggot?)

This doesn't cause any issues with air trapped in the oil cooler? (i.e. the EGR cooler flow doesn't also double as an air bleed?) Would simplify things considerably is this is all OK. (Therefore 7, 37 and 35/36 & the tube between them all no longer required?)

Anyone ever had hassles from 'the authorities' for removing EGR on a Td5?

A few more questions if may peoples:
    * Can anyone confirm my parts numbers for 3, 5, 14, 21, 22, 23, 25 and 32, please?
    * 32, the three-legged hose to reservoir, fuel cooler 'tee' and ??? Where does this hose join into the mess of pipes and hoses behind the lower part of the radiator? (And by the way, what genius() thought this shamozzle was a better idea than a simple cast thermostat housing on the head with, perhaps, a short elbow hose for the bypass?!! Talk about creating complication just because we can!! )

I’ve often thought that I much preferred my old Series I cooling system. Radiator , top hose, bottom hose, bypass hose and nothing else. Simples😊 could be worse though. Under the bonnet of a D5 it’s just a huge mass of hoses big and small.

    Hey

Have you checked the diagram is exactly what's on your D2A?
I've seen that the last of the D2a have some different hoses, fuel Cooler and oil cooler is some times blocked off?
Have you still got the egr cooler? If you have blocked the egr off at the manifold etc you can remove several of the hoses so won't need to buy these.

Roverlord will be able to confirm the hose numbers if that’s where you’re buying?
Send him the hoses you think you need and your vinDIIA Spaghetti

If you remove the EGR cooler and piping you’ll need a 19mm short hose and plug for the oil cooler, I used a silicon hose and alloy bung from (my performance car.com)

And a 8mm bung for the header tank end of the EGR return hose, just cut a small section and insert the bung.
