I would rather suggest exactly the opposite that this has proved that 'oft repeated comment' to be completely true. As you've stated, the auto lock up is set in stone in the electronics at the factory - this has proven to be true in that no one has been able to adjust the auto lock up on the automatic transmission controller computer (which is the bit of electrics that you have referred to). Instead, to modify it, the factory electrics have to be removed and replaced with either a Compushfit aftermarket device or alternative computer with the auto lock up characteristic that you seek.
This is a interesting thread which got me to take a look on Microcat.
There is a listing for:
- D04035: ECU-GEARBOX & TRANSFER BOX; and
- D04040: ECU-GEARBOX & TRANSFER BOX
I cannot find anything that distinguishes which is the Td5 and whit is the V8 automatic transmission control units? Presumably one category is for each - but that would also mean that the 4.0L and 4.6L V8's must use the same controller.
As sierafery posted previously there is a large number of different part numbers listed for this part. They also vary in being "LOW COMPRESSION TRACTION CONTROL" or "HIGH COMPRESSION TRACTION CONTROL" - any ideas on what the difference is?

I also looked at the P38 Range Rover parts to see if they're listing matched that of one of the lists for the Discovery 2 which would indicate the V8 list. They also have two listings - presumably one for the BMW Diesel motor that other markets received and one for the V8's, but they seem to have a split Gearbox and Transfer Box controllers into two rather than a single like in the Discovery 2's. None of the part numbers match indicating that they are unique controllers to each vehicle.Quote:

Is the unit located underneath the passenger seat below the amplifier etc? I had a quick look under the seat last night but wasn't able to eyeball the unit or the sticker on it with it's part number.
Used units look to be cheap enough on eBay from the USA etc. but maybe a start point prior to trying one is to check your current part number and see if it lists and high or low compression traction control unit then match up a V8 part number with the same compression level and of similar VIN year range...
The bloke that told me about that had the auto ECU in a manual Td5 that he used to do some or other type of competition driving with, he swore by it as the way to go for the non-programmable ECU range.
Just to clarify... this is the ENGINE ECU I am talking about, not the transmission one.
I've purchased a UHC50010 ECU-GEARBOX & TRANSFER BOX from a D2 V8 and am waiting for it to be delivered to try out this theory. It cost about USD $50.00 delivered from the USA which is cheap enough to give it a go and find out the effect.

Of note is that as per my post a few above all the Td5 units are 'high compression' therefore I went with a high compression version V8 one too to match. See what happens.
It sure would be.
I figure with the VNT, exhaust and ECU retuning, that the power and torque levels are much closer now to the V8 level (probably above even given that the V8’s weren’t that exciting) than the standard Td5 so hopefully the V8’s shift points and lock up speeds are more suited to what it is now.
I already have the larger modified (HD) V8 torque converter fitted from Ashcroft Transmissions in the UK.

My understanding is low compression is V8 pre facelift
High compression is V8 facelift
Then the rest are td5 referenced by the vin numbers
Which is why I think yours will be what I mentioned on the other thread , ie IGG000070

Yep, you'd think someone , somewhere would've had a play .
not sure if its good or bad but anything V8 from the states will be from a 4.6 ( with sai ?)
