Is the whole lot like that or just the top 1/4
hi folks. collected a project car last week. '99 td5 auto, with a suspected blown head gasket.
nothing unexpected except for the rad.
was told rad was new. it looks it. but it bulges both top and bottom ????
i would have thought that if there was a build up of pressure in the system then it should exit via the expansion tank cap ( loss of coolant etc ).
i even found pics of other cars with " blown head gasket etc " that appear to have same situ with radiator.
"why is it so " ???
Is the whole lot like that or just the top 1/4
A quick look on my phone and I thought it was the intercooler, but not so sure now![]()

This is more common than you think. It's actually one i
Of the first things we look at when diagnosing head gasket issues with the td5.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
the reason why this sparked my curiosity is earlier this year i rebuilt an 99 auto td5.
it had been totally cooked . engine was scrapped completely.
but the rad was not deformed, and still working well in the car with an engine replacement.
thanks for all the replies. :-)
I often wonder that myself why it doesn't relief through the tank, instead it bursts hoses or does the radiator. Had D1 V8's that would split the expansion tank at the seem due to a head gasket leak. Aftermarket caps are also a problem, Always go genuine expansion caps on the D2.
i would need to see the whole radiator to see how it is effected to say for sure but for that damage it needs to be squashed, so id guess that the tanks and core are growing from the pressure and heat but they are being prevented from going out due to the inter cooler mounted off them so instead of going out they go in and bend the radiator core.
as to why the cooling system cant release the pressure well the system land rover used is well compromised to say the least so as soon as something happens it has air traps everywhere and one big one in the top hose so the cap cant hope release the amount of pressure that is continually building (think of a pot full of water boiling with the lid on the little pressure release hole cant keep up with pressure so the lid keeps jumping up and down to release the extra pressure what happens id the lid is then stuck down solid? pressure builds up in the pot until the pot breaks or runs out of water to boil)
Another possible reason for such a bent up rad is that it may have been purchased as an ebay cheapie, and or delivery damage.
any idea of who/what/where the rad was purchased?
Arthur.
All these discos are giving me a heart attack!
