Check there is no milky substance in your oil or your oil cap.
Check compression on each cylinder.
Do a pressure test on your water system.
I've fixed the leak in the top of the radiator and no more drips, and I cannot find anywhere the coolant is escaping but escaping it is. On a 130km return trip to town and back the expansion tank is empty and it takes about a litre and half to top up. Can only think its burning it. How likely is this and how do I check for sure. yesterday I thought the exhaust smelled a bit sulphury when she was idling from cold in the driveway. Cost of having this done if it is beyond my meagre expertise? I'm wondering if car and I are coming to end of the road.......310K, new tyres coming up and I'm never trusting the TC not to give up. What's she worth? One dinged rear side panel, a brand new rear bumper and the typical ugly blemishes in the duco. Very economical and goes like stink when I ask it to. It's been a good car for the nearly 100K km we've put on the clock. Spend money on a known decent car or let it go and look for some new wheels? Sadly SWMBO not keen on another LR.
Cheers,
Pete

Oil and inside of rad cap are clean. I don't have the tools for pressure testing. I've never cracked the injectors - sounds like scary stuff to me!
But thanks for the suggestions.
Its hard to comment accurately as the diagnosis hasn't been done, but it could more likely be a cracked head leaking into an exhaust port as this apparently is pretty common.
If so the car is not worth very much at all, so it depends on whether you want to keep it and do it up and have a relatively known quantity.
In good mechanical condition it's worth maybe 6K -8k but with a cracked head maybe 2K.IMHO.(if that) That's for a D2 .A D2A might be worth another grand.
Just from observation it's pretty hard to get a below 200KK TD5 these days as people seem to keep them, and over 200Kk you are possibly looking at the same problems .
In my case having bought mine at 134KK , I would probably grit my teeth and fix it.

Isn't the fuel cooler and oil cooler susceptible to leaking in strange ways?
I'd be more inclined with Philip's method of fixing up too.
That way you know work has been done and that it should last you a few more 100K klms.
Buying a supposedly 'known' good car as a replacement is always fraught with unknowns in reality .. no matter how well known it supposedly is.

There is a small hose behind the turbo which feeds the oil cooler its hard to see but is known to leak. Also try bleeding the system as mine took a few goes to get all the air out. If you run it till its warm, crack the coolant cap and check that there is coolant flowing out of the return (small hose that runs from the left hand top of radiator back to the coolant res. Have a good read of bleeding procedure in the good oil. Also most radiator shops have the gear to test for head gases in the coolant ( name escapes me)

I have a mate with plenty tools. I'll see if I can get his help for a pressure test.
Change the head gasket if the head hasn’t been off it’s not an expensive job if it’s just the head walking.
If it’s stuffed then it will get expensive
Bleed the system properly , go for a drive for 5 minutes from cold , check to make sure there is no pressure build up. If there is no pressure after 5 minutes, check for steam out the exhaust , if there is sign of coolant out the exhaust you will have to remove exhaust manifold and look down the ports for cracks and a whitish residue.
If there is pressure ( check by squeezing the top hose ) then replace the head gasket , dowels with steel etc.( no biggie )
If there is a crack , replace the head either with good 2nd hand or AMC, or sell as is.
