    D2 w/o CDL or D2a

    G’day everyone from D2 family

Looking into buying a D2 and I know the 2003 onwards D2a got the CDL installed factory.

I’ve found a decent one on sale but unfortunately it’s a 2002 model which means no CDL(I know the mechanism is there), so I have a few questions.

    1. How much is to install the CDL? Is there a arb Central diff lock or something on the market?

    2. And if it is installable, is it capable enough to tour around Australia without going too crazy offroad and I will avoid the difficult track as much as I could?

    3. Or should i just go with arb front and back airlocker ($3500ish) and forget about the CDL?

    4. Or should I just wait for a good D2a come up?

    All your inputs highly appreciated.

Are you sure it has the internals,as i am pretty sure that year didn't?

Without CDL,normal touring will be fine, stock.

    I had both D2,and D2a.

The D2a was better, but the D2 was still very capable in stock form, unless your doing hard core work.

    My '02 doesn't have them.

Personally I'd buy the best overall car, the CDL can be added if you're mechanically inclined, and the D2 without the CDL is pretty damned capable anyway, the TC is supposedly more aggressive.

My 02 D2 (01 build 02 compliance) didnt have the internals. They stopped putting in the CDL internals a year or so earlier. I put in an output housing from D1/Defer cant recall which now. I used a basic push pull handle on trans tunnel which works well. Very good vehicle without but CDL definately helps in uphill scrabble situations and when starting from stationary in soft sand.

    Cheers

Your VIN should answer the question. Have a look here.

My 2000 D2 TD5 has CDL internals with no linkage. I bought a 2nd hand D2 linkage and installed it with help of YouTube. I was done in less than 1 hour.

It’s an entirely different off road vehicle. Definitely better, but I’d still like a mechanical locking rear.

Mate, if the mechanism is there:
    1. Its just the linkages and it depends on what type you want. Prior to the D2a people would fit Disco1 linkages, the factory setups after the D2a came out. There were others like AMV's which were based on windscreen wiper motors and JDMW which are just a simple link, and even just a bolt through the tunnel but most now fit the cable operated D2a setup which is about $650 + fitting. If it does turn out to be a nonCDL transfer case also, then just replace it or the snout from a dismantled one - they're not that rare.

    2. You don't need more that just CDL to tour australia.

    3. In order of installation - CDL first always, then rear, then front.

    4. Only you can make that call. The D2a was improved, but its still the same vehicle. If you've found a vehicle you really like, then thats probably the one for you.
    Cheers

My 02 disco has no internals for cdl but I think Ashcroft atb front and rear would more then work for most situations this is what I am going to do.

The reason for CDL first before axle based traction aids was due to quite a few people getting into trouble with failed ascents. No CDL and you're relying on ETC for all drive as the front goes light and when reversing out it would leave the fronts locked during decent and with stall recovery and the vehicle would come down without control.
