Thread: D2 w/o CDL or D2a

Ashcroft atb diff centres are not lockers they work similar to limited slip diffs and only come into play when one wheel looses traction my first preference would be a cdl but the car didn't come out with one and I'm not into hard core off road just like exploring our bush and if things get a little difficult can hit low and keep going.

My mate has Ashcroft's ATB front and rear on his D2a. They are strong centres. But in terms of capability and safety it is CDL first then diff traction aides.

I have a 99 D2...CDL internals but no linkage...I just fitting a simple handle that I can push/pull under drivers door for the rare occasions that I need CDL. However, when you need it, you need it! Almost killed myself in the mountains relying on TC alone - it's an older system that is nowhere near as competent as D3/4 TC...

From my experience I would say.

If you see a really good 2002 buy it. That is what I did 5 years ago even though I really wanted a D2A. Mine was so rare with 134KK on the clock and two owner it was a no brainer even if it did break down on the way home .LOL

You can fit the transfer case nose from an earlier car with the CDL mechanics as you go along.

The 2002 has the EU3 engine with programmable ECU (same as D2A) , so more power is very simple compared to earlier cars.
The only thing I lust after from a D2A is/are the headlights.

When i bought my D2 the D2a was just out. I got an ES ex-demo model with SLS and electric everything for less than a mid spec D2a but did agonise about it at the time.
Kept up with the group in D2a's, Defenders etc for a few years until I had the CDL fitted more as the safety aspect mentioned by Slunnie above.
I had a scary incident with the front end breaking loose on a greasy slope.

So will the cdl nose of a disco 1 fit a disco 2 I read somewhere you need to cut a wire somewhere as my car has no cdl internals at all .

Yes it will. You may need to cut the wire (or put a switch in line) depending on which revision your abs ecu is.

I am just about to fit a D1 linkage to the D2 I purchased a few months ago, and I have the SRD000070 ecu which needed the wire cut or a switch. I have some bad connections there as if i touch the harness where the switch was put I get the 3 amigos, so I bought a later ecu and will remove the switch when I find where the problem is.
