Given the age of them and varying condition I would judge it based on a single vehicle test. At least try a second one.

I have and use a TDi auto and a TD5 auto on nearly a daily basis for towing a 20' van as well as a 3T car trailer. Around town the D1 is great but lacks the top end. The TD5 can hold 100kms on the open road easily.
Without anything hooked up my D2a is quite lively and never had any issues with it being a slouch off the line.

IMHO they are pretty slow stock. Their official 0-100 is 17 sec AFAIR.

My theory is that they are really detuned to keep EGTs low when towing in hot climates and with poor fuel.

The result is that unless you have your foot flat they feel very slow.

They should rev to about 4100RPM before the change to second in an auto, and when I bought mine it went into a big miss at about 3800. it turned out when diagnosed by Offtrack and others that the MAF was over reading then dropping out. A new MAF fixed that problem.

With my mods Mine now feels like a V8 with a lot of go on just a little throttle, and I reckon it would be in the 10-11seconds 0-100 area.
The trade off is that I have to watch the EGTs a bit, not so much without towing but when towing , its not wise to use the cruise control as the ECU uses WOT as soon as it slows even 5Kmh and the EGTs run to over 700C.

There are lots of things that individually and collectively will blunt the performance also, the most common being the boost modulator, the MAF, the boost sensor being gunged up , leaks in the intercooler pipes, the fuel temp and intake temp sensors etc.
Its best to run a Nanocom onto any considered buying to look at any engine faults recorded but if possible have a Rover Specialist have a look at the car for any serious problems.
    Regards Philip A

    What size tyres?

Stock the thing accelerates fine in auto form, just lacks a bit of mid range torque.

Bigger OD tyres with a stock engine will knock the go department into a cocked hat.

Mines no where near as lethargic as the Deefer, and it went well for 300Tdi as the fuel was turned up, big exhaust, ported head, new injectors, etc. but it did have 33" tyres.

I'll probably be accused of having rocks in my head buying the first one I actually drove, but the deal is done and we'll pick it up on the weekend.
Good honest stock vehicle with 220k, Epsom Green, 7 seater. Price was reasonable and the seller is a thoroughly nice landy/rangie tragic.

I'm now on the Nanocom group buy list, and you can expect to see me around this area a bit more asking dumb questions about electronic and computer thingies that I have NFI about.

If it all gets too much for me I'll just head to the shed, start up the County and stick my head under the bonnet. That should realign a few brain cells

How well equipped is your tool box?
Do you have Torx and Hex sockets.....?
You will need Rave plus a few other sites have the workshop manual in PDF format for free.

until you get the nanocom , do a stall test , ( 2600-2800 rpm is normal for stock ) lower than this indicates a problem , being stock with egr , I would suggest you start by cleaning map and maf sensors ( use contact or dedicated maf cleaner ). check intercooler hoses for holes / delamination , make sure you hear the fuel pump when you turn ign on with engine off, check for other stuff when you get the nanocom.
While not a powerhouse when stock they are quicker than a 300 tdi unless it's well tuned.
    a well tuned td5 is a V8 beater.

Oh yeah ... you should really have had someone experienced with these have a pre purchase look, but you knew that and will no doubt enjoy it anyway

Yeah, I have a pretty well equipped tool box but will need to grab Rave to cover the D2.

True Gavin , though I remember Jeremy Clarkson stating that discovery drivers were murderers ( I thought that might be a bit harsh )
