Hi all.
Chasing a little more power for my 2003 Disco TD5 Auto. Have already taken out the CAT and replaced with a straight through pipe. Seems more free mid-range and gave the turbo a nice little whistle.
It's still a slug though, especially with a small trailer on the back. So I was planning on taking it to MR Auto for a "Stage 3" remap. Apparently all 3 stages are the same price.
The way it was explained to me was as follows:
Stage 1 is just the re-map.
Stage 2 involves changing the mid muffler to a hi-flow muffler or a straight through pipe and the re-map.
Stage 3 includes the hi-flow muffler, upping the boost and the re-map.
I was informed to get the Hi-flow muffler or straight through pipe put in before the re-map, so:
I can get a lukey hi-flow stainless steel muffler welded in place for $160, or a Mercury stainless steel from somewhere else for $130. Either that, or just get a straight bit of pipe welded in instead of the muffler. BUT, I have a family so
really want to avoid it being TOO loud or droning. Ideally, if it gets a nice throaty tone under acceleration, but otherwise not too noisy or droning, I'll be happy.
Recommendations on whether to go for the hi-flow muffler or straight thru pipe? If the muffler is the go, any brand in particular and has there been a noticeable difference in torque/hp and fuel economy, with either the muffler or the remap or both?
Thanks guys.

Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.

I'd recommend a hot dog style resonator in it's place. Given the clearance available it will fit better. Any brand will do so long as it's straight through style - you're over thinking it beyond that.
Ask them who the tech is that performs the remap or if it’s a generic map or tailored to your setup etc
Here’s some light reading for you Td5 Tuning - a "Torque Based" approach | DiscoTD5.com
Can you get access to a Nanocom or look up the members list and maybe for a few cold ones you could save yourself some coin and have another member download your map send it off to be remapped then reload. Several turners like Alive or stormtuning and TD5inside and there’s probably others that do this type of work.
Cheers Lemo
For what it’s worth I’ve a stage 1 tune, egr and cat delete and I’m more then happy with the extra performance
Sorry guys, I forgot to mention, I also have EGR block off. I am being charged $800 to take it to a shop, leave it overnight, and have them send the file to Alive Tuning in the UK for a (what I have been told to be) "custom" remap.
Is it simple enough if I were to find a local with a nanocom, to have him download my file, send it to Alive and re-upload? Or can too many things go wrong and is it safer just to have a reputable LR specialist deal with it? I'm fairly clue with the tech stuff myself. How much would Alive charge to do it for an individual?
Thanks for the replies guys.
It’s relatively easy, just need a constant 12vDC power supply connected to the battery (Not a Battery charger unless it has power supply mode) and follow the instructions for the map down load using the Nanocom
MR must be a dealer for Alive and for what it’s worth if I was getting another tune i’ll be looking to alive. I follow them on FB and like what they post look very professional!
I’f you can find someone with a Nanocom that loaded maps etc before it’ll be easy as!
Here’s a link to Alive Remapping Archives - Alive Tuning | Alive Tuning UK around $450 ish for the tune file etc. so they are charging you about $350 for about 30minutes work to down load and upload the file??
Just remember that 'Stages' are just internal designations that various tuners use to classify their services and compare their own products from each other. They're not directly equal or comparable between different tuners.
What your doing is fine if you want the easy way and are happy to pay for it. If you want to save some money then I suggest you do some more reading and assessing of your options. There's plenty of information around if you spend the time looking.
