I was running 245/70/16 Yokohama Geolanders then I fitted a set of 245/70/16 Micky Thomson ATZ P3's and the differance in handling and off road performance is amazing.
The only downside is the Micky Thomson's are a bit noisy

Also, I think my view on handling in a 4WD is that the driver should be as comfortable as possible behind the wheel. Of course there as compromises depending on what you build your beast up to be but making sure the driver is comfortable and confident behind the wheel should be paramount.

I just realised that you are also in Hobart. My D2a is currently off the road as I'm needing to do the front ball joints and won't have a chance to get back to them for at least another two weeks, but once done your welcome to come and check it out and see my setup and how it handles.

That would be awesome! I need a control (point of reference) to help solve little issues I may have with mine.
    Cheers.

    Tyres for your intended use

I have a similar car to what you described. I have run 18” wheels on 265x55 highway pattern (I think that is correct, it was a while ago!) I am currently running 235x85 on 16” wheels with BFG MT. You want the 16” wheels when running off road more tyre sidewall to soak up the rocks and bumps and when you let the tyres down the foot print is nice and long to give you much more contact patch. For road handling you want less sidewall so 18” wheels are the go with lower profile tyres for less squirm. A bit harsher ride. I run a slight lift on the rear airbags, done with changes to the height settings via computer.

So horses for courses as far as tyres and lift height.

Unless your car came with ACE I doubt you are going to fit it. I am sure it is possible but you would have to get it off a wreck and I am not sure what is involved in getting it done. By all accounts I have heard the ACE makes it run like it is on rails! But when the tyres let go you will not have much warning.

I only seem to hear how well the ACE equipped versions steer and handle so just trying to provide some balance

I don't have ACE fitted on my D2a and it is rock solid on any road/track surface, Much better than my 79 series or my Navara
ACE is Good But it isn't an essential bit of kit, Knowing how to drive to conditions is Far more important

Very reassuing to hear! What have you done to the D2a from standard? Or is it mostly keeping the stock parts maintained?
    Cheers: )

She is pretty much stock except for the coil spring replacements for the SLS and a bull bar.
I have re-placed or refurbished just about everything on the running gear and engine/transmission and fitted a set of Micky Thomson ATZ P3's on 16 inch wheels and fitted a heavy duty set of front and rear rotors and pads.
I service the truck every 5,000k's
As long as the D2's are well maintained they handle really well (even without ACE), The stock rotors and pads are pretty woeful though.
They excel on beach work and are a pleasure to drive on the highway.
