    Time to retire the D2a

    I have just got back from a round trip from Geraldton WA to The Gulf of Carpentaria and back and although I didn't have any serious issues with the D2a it simply didn't like the 40C+ heat experienced the majority of the trip.
    I couldn't use the air con and sometimes I even had to run the heaters to keep the ECT below 100C, That and the 23l/100k fuel consumption has taken its toll on the enjoyment factor.
    The engine has just had the heads and the top end refurbished, the entire cooling system is less than 15,000k's old and no I haven't got an air lock in the cooling system She simply hates hot weather.
    I wont be parting with her simply because I enjoy driving the truck and there is No way I will ever recoup what I have spent on her anyway But as my main "Go To" for long trips her roll has ended.

    My needs are quite simple when I head off on a trip towing a 1.5t boat and the D2a is fine for short runs or winter runs But doing 800/1000k's a day in summer becomes a PITA.
    I have added a 2012 Navara dual cab to my stable now and this little truck will tow the boat at 100kph all day any weather and uses less than half the fuel the 4l V8 in the D2a does and although it lacks the refinement of the Disco and I suspect it is less capable off road I feel that it is a better option for those longer trips which I normally do in hotter weather.
    I will be using the Disco for any beach work because I think it is the best 4WD that I have ever owned in sand (and I have owned dozens of other 4WD's) But for serious touring/towing the Navara is a much better option for me.

    Trout is the thermostat the stock 3 way?

    I have an inline top hose thermostat and the 3 way removed and the V8 runs cool even in 40 degrees towing my 2 tonn Seafarer Vagabond. Mines a manual with stock manual box oil cooler which helps overall with heat I suppose.

    Maybe you should tow the D2 behind the Navara instead of the 1.5 t boat for the just in case times?

    I have the stock 3 way setup fitted.
    I have seen your setup and it looks really good But after having spent well over $10,000 on repairs to get the D2a back up to stock it is time to say enough is enough for the old girl.
    I Love driving the truck But I Hate forever having to put my hand in my pocket just to keep it running well.
    The D2a will most likely keep on going for another 100,000k's if I only use it for short runs and having fun on the beach (which is what I intend to use her for now) and on the tracks But her touring days are over as far as I am concerned hence the "retirement" or semi retirement.
    The Navara is "Soulless" But it will do all I require of it as a boat tug and it will never be as enjoyable to drive as my D2a, It is what it is.
    I will also save thousands on a long trip on fuel.
    If I was thinking with my heart I would continue to use the Disco as my main tourer But when I think with my head that is a lousy decision.

    Factory 82c thermostat will have the ECT running at 90 in all conditions, guaranteedTime to retire the D2a

    The coolant doesn't need to stay below 100 degrees, thats quite a safe temp for it. The D2 coolant system is designed to run hot and will do this especially at lower RPM. Interestingly, at cololer temps it will also compensate. Never the less, they are designed to run hotter than 100 degrees. The pressure in the coolant system allows a higher boiling temperature and the OAT bumps it up a little bit more too.

    Simon I know the cooling system was designed to run hotter on the D2 for emissions (I can confirm that seat of the pants 85 degrees yields just as much grunt and identical fuel economy to 10-15 degrees hotter stock temps). But the fancy injection and cooling system designed to prioritise the heater matrix is also strapped to a very old design of motor. Personally I dont like it. These motors last a very long time with cooler running like earlier D1's and even cooler earlier motors. I am much more confident in my 4.6 now its running much cooler. I dont subscribe to the wear theory. 80 plus is fine.

    I completely agree
    Running at higher temps pressurises the cooling system which puts strain on all the hoses, hose clips and radiators which cant be a Good thing and I am not a fan of boiling the oil in the sump and degrading it due to running the engine in excess of 100c.
    Having a good heater may be fine in Europe But not so much here in Aus.
    My engine is over 250,000k's old now and running it hot will wreak it in my opinion.
    The inline thermostat and bypassing the stock 3 way system should have been adapted to ALL the D2 V8's in Australia.
    It isn't any wonder that pretty much Every D2 V8's have overheating dramas in their stock form.

    I was just responding to the OP re worrying that he cant keep it below 100 and not enjoying the vehicle as a result. All I was saying is that he doesn't need to keep it below 100, theyre not designed to run to a max temp of 100, they're designed to run well over that. If people are getting better results from an 82 degree thermostat, then I'd be quick to change it out also.
