    ouch.

I will not be selling my D2a. It has 320k on the clock. I want to have the car to teach the children how to drive a manual. The youngest is but 7, so I want another 11 years out of it. I love the off road capability.

I've just replaced the radiator and thermostat in our TD5. The replacement thermostat opens at 78° and she now runs at around 82° on our 50km trip to town, instead of 88/89° from the old rad. Sits on the same temperature on the freeway @ 110 fully loaded, giving a bit better than 10 litres to 100km. I have the Nanocom set at 100° and it only used to get up there dragging the caravan up long hills. Have not had the van on a trip since fitting the new bits. I had thought the TD5 just runs very cool, but is there such a thing as too cool?

Mine has always run at about 83C indicated on my dry head sensor which is within 2c of the Nanocom temperature.
It will raise to 90 or so onlong hills towing my camper trailer at 800Kg to 1000kg.
It has only ever got to 100c once towing my camper up the Alpine way NSW from the west to Thredbo which is the longest and steepest climbs in OZ.
I recall in the Kimberley it used to run hotter at 45ambient , and AFAIR ran at around 88-90 ie thermostat fully open.
So AFAIK there is no problem with running at low 80s.
BTW I recently changed my radiator and water pump. The old radiator was only blocked on the bottom few tubes which feed to the fuel temperature heat exchanger . My running temps now are the same old/vs new radiator.

    Normal Temp 210F

This is in California and I'll update the trips forum. Not a disco but a GMC Savana 12 seater mini bus. The temp gauge would sit a hair below 210F I was nervous for a while. I'm not sure how accurate it is. I wondered why the freeway had signs saying turn your air con of to avoid over heating. After going up 6000ft I thought I may have the answer.
The disco would get to 93 at 40C in a car park at maccas with thre AC on. hence the 210 nerves.

My D2 stock in 40 degree heat would run 95 to 102 in 5th gear at 70kph depending on whether she was lugging a bit or not and up to 105 in heavy traffic. The 4.6 with top hose thermostat is 82-90 in same conditions. Very acceptable.

    Cheers
