My bt50 is the later one fitted with the dpf. Most owners I have come across with this fitted complain bitterly about their lousy fuel economy. mines not using any at the moment, stuck in my shed for over two months waiting for an outcome on my engine.

Speaking of Ripco...do not use Repco oil filters on your TD5 as they are impossible to seal. I nearly lost my engine but saw the oil stream just in time. After fitting the spin on filter and tightening it then checking for leaks the seal then failed and it dumped several litres of oil out in seconds.
I believe it is a design fault which relates to the thread section stretching after tightening therby allowing pressurized oil to escape past the seal. The replacement filter did exactly the same.
I wrote to Ripco bout it and told the store manager but naturally they never replied nor refunded my money.
Hence we don't shop there anymore.
BTW it's not "Bad Nulon" but incorrect Nulon that you selected by not reading the container.
I used the correct Nulon 5W-30 diesel for several years with good results until I changed to Penrite 5W-40 diesel on the respected advice of this forum.

Wow! I'm sure there's plenty of us 300 Tdi owners out here where we get 10 to 11 litres/ 100km uphill and down dale. We'll be slow off the mark but still do the business at the end of the day without all the hype. If the oil price seems to be too good to be true, it's not!Quote:

The filters (generically) that have the issue have a flatish top on them inside the inner perimeter of the seal retaining lips.

Td5s werent the only engines affected.
Just on oil specs - for the 2.7 TDV6 it is a 5W30 oil - to over simplify this means it is suitable where outside air temps range from 5 to 30 degrees C. Now this might be OK for the country of origin but is this really suitable for Australia, particularly in summer.
Now here in Canberra winter temps are often lower than zero in the morning but over 5 during the day so I guess 5 in the 5W30 is Ok and the 30 is Ok in winter.
But summer is different and temps are normally over 30 like many other places in Aust.
So should something like 5W40 actually have been specified for Australian summer conditions?

Ambient temp doesn't really affect oil operating temps too much if the cooling system is up to snuff.
And any 5W-XX oil is good for stupid low start temps well below anything we see in Australia.
But there's a massive difference in go between a 3.2 and a 300Tdi.Quote:

I wish I had a tdi at the moment. goldfields off road Kalgoorlie (the repco dealer) has just washed their hands of it making a stupid suggestion that if the insert was missing the filter element would have collapsed.Is seems the are claiming The Mazda dealer, or me took it out and threw it away. There was a small amount of dust on the outlet side of the air filter and they are now screaming its has been dusted. Mazda, who maintained forcefully that without this insert the engine would fail, have now also claiming it is dusted. They have jumped on this possibility as a way out of fixing this problem. I removed the hose from the intercooler to the inlet manifold.(something the local repco agent or mazda failed to do) and apart of a film of oil it was as clean as. They have offered me the labour costs of fitting a new engine WOW. I am at a loss on what action to take, with the Mazda dealer in Qld and the repco dealer in WA. I am thinking I may have to remove this engine and try to fix it myself,a solution fraught with untold problems. If I could find a buyer (at a bargain price) who has the ability to rebuild this thing I would bail out.
