    Bad nulon and failed bt50

    Hi
Its been a while since I made one of the worst mistakes of my life. selling my much loved disco td5 (310000 klms) and replacing it with a new (nov 2916) Mazda bt50. but more of that later. Last night one of the many boxing day special adds flashed a tempting $19.99 special for nulon 5w30 fully synthetic motor oil at Auto Barn. I turned up there this morning along with a heap of hilux izuzu nissan toyota ute and other owners to take advantage of this great deal. I bought 4 x 5 ltr. I was checking the containers when I got home and noticed something looked odd, the guff on the side said it was suitable for all sorts of vehicles with more on the back, the list went on then I saw the fine print "not suitable for diesel engines" now I have not bought nulon for some time ( I generally buy castrol edge ) but are not most synthetic oils suitable for both petrol and diesel. I hope the other diesel buyers noticed it also. Now the horrors of jumping ship from a Land Rover to a NEW Mazda BT50 heap of junk. It has done 55000 kls, sucked more fuel than I thought was possible, and now the engine has failed. Mazda have denied warranty because I had the last service done by a Repco agent and the the insert in the oil filter cap was missing,Without this insert the oil bypasses the filter and buggers the engine. Repco are trying to sort this out, but their insurance are saying there is no proof they lost it. These engines seem to fail quite regularly but Mazda claim it is nothing to do with them, stating if the insert was not there in the first place the engine would not have lasted 55000kls. I hope Defender owners with a 4 cylinder version of this engine do not have similar problems. The mate I sold the disco to has now done over 360000 kls the last 5000 odd on the rear diff only after dropping the front propshaft. The disco seem to be reveling in the mistreatment he gives it
All the best for the New Year

Wow . I was going to buy some for the l322 td6 . Then realized it was 5w30 not 5w40. I b usually pick up a couple at Costco at $40 each.
Sounds like your in a pickle with the engine and none of your fault , but your the poor bugger with a broken mule.

What insert are you talking about? The bit that goes into the middle of the filter?

I use the diesel variant of that Nulon oil (5W30) and have had no issues.

Theres a couple of nulons that while they post the same viscosity and base type (mineral.full and semi syn) have an addative package for petrol and another for diesel.

As a general.rule diesel oil works fine in petrol engines but not vice versa.

The insert in the filter cap is provided with a genuine filter but not with a cheap aftermarket filter although superseding and i believe a replacement filter cup design the insert is not required on later engines.

I thoery if repco have fitted an incorrect or later filter without saving the insert they are responsible for the engine.

Mazda should have on record the required filter numbers and the repco cross references.

If the supplied filter number (hopefully on the reciept for the service) doesnt match the one provided by Mazda then it sbould be a relatively simple open/close case for an engine on repco.

    Good luck.

    Hi bsperka
In the bt50 this insert clips on to the housing cap and fits up the centre of the filter cartridge. the insert has a relief valve fitted to the base (cap end) of it

I used to get a consistent mid 10l/100km out of the work BT with the 3.2 on a road trip.
Running around Canberra and sometimes to Cooma fully loaded it was mid 11's-12's.

Ours is an auto,it gets the same as above, loaded all the time.

But the auto is no where as smooth as the ZF in the Disco

The diesel Hi Ace we have with its 'low tech' 3.0l gets slightly better, loaded as well, around 10.5l/100 in town. They don't have the 2.8l in them yet.

Our work BT get amazing fuel economy....ours is fleet managed and only gets serviced at Mazda. I prefer my work hi-lux over the BT even with less range and less grunt. Hi-lux just feels better built
