    DIIA Td5 coolant leak

Lady Daphne II's latest 'entertainment' for us was a near empty coolant reservoir a few days ago. Crawled underneath today and it seems to be coming from the the flange at the back of the coolant pump. The bottom hose connection seems dry.

From older posts, it seems the o-ring seals in the pump do fail and there's also mention of a core plug under the exhaust manifold too. Can anyone tell me where to find this plug so I can have a look at it too please?

Do the pump seals sound like likely suspects? If so, it seems conventional wisdom to replace the pump, not just the seals? (tho' only 160,000km on this vehicle)

If I'm doing major dismantling on this side of the motor, should I also replace the core plug mentioned while I'm at it?

Haven't had any exhaust manifold leak issues yet. Is it just a matter of time or will limiting max. EGT forestall this problem?

Thank in advance for your comments and suggestions.

    DIIA Td5 coolant leak

I’d suggest it’s more likely the pump shaft seal leaking from the bleed hole rather than an o ring fail.
In any case if you change the pump use genuine.
I have had a few TD5 in the family, 3 tuned and a couple std, and only one had oversize exhaust stud fitted due to the previous owner ignoring mechanical sympathy. That was a std tune also.
So for me I wouldn’t change what isn’t a problem.
The plug is behind the manifold and can be tight to remove.
You don’t need to change the plug itself only the sealant and only if it’s loose/ leaking.
There is pics from many moons ago which may have been lost in “the great crash” but not a difficult job.

    Suggestion only.
Pull the oil cooler and do the o rings while all that side is apart and change the stubby tapered ( secret) hose behind the turbo while you’re there.
Maybe the best extra hour and coffee money you’ll ever spend.

    also a suggestion
Plug that hose, and its counterpart on the header tank, remove the EGR cooler.

Ditto on the oil cooler, i thought i was leaking from the back of the pump but was the oil cooler gasket, can be hard to see where it is leaking as it runs in behind the brackets and out the bottom.
