    Am I crazy or what?

Am I crazy or what? For full info, see my post in" Welcome to all D2 owners". I've had the D2 Td5 for almost 3 months and I've been really happy with it except for one thing - the manual gearbox. My left knee isn't in the best of shape and the Disco has a heavy-duty clutch. I didn't, however, see this on its own as a reason to think about changing given the low mileage, general condition and everything else I know about the vehicle.

So, why am I going to look at a D2a Td5 automatic? The car in question is a one owner 2003 D2a with only 140,000km on the clock and a full service history. It's bog standard apart from an ARB front bar, has virtually never been off road and price is around $8k. Seems a bit high but finding something with this mileage is unusual. So, I've basically got to start thinking about everything Td5 related that I don't have to worry about on my current vehicle. Again, see my previous post for full info.

I've learned a lot about Td5's from this forum and from the bits of work I've been doing on mine and feel reasonably confident about going over the vehicle (which doesn't have SLS or ACE) apart from two things. First, the auto box. I know nothing about these things. After this mileage and age are problems likely? Also, if I do a remap etc and generally increase torque and power, do I need some kind of upgrade to the box? The other question is that it has LPG injection. I've never come across this in practice although I know the theory. (For those who have skim read this post, it's a diesel, not a V8). Any comments?

And 4 months ago I said I'd never touch a Land Rover again! I guess I've just become addicted. I've begun to realise the Td5's good points - one of the major things being that I can do most things on it myself as I can with my 79 Series Cruiser.

All information and comments will be gratefully received.

    Are you crazy?

Are you crazy? Lets check a few items.

You bought a Land Rover CHECK!
You bought a Discovery 2 CHECK!
You are thinking of buying another one CHECK! (I'd buy a parts car if I had somewhere to store it)

    Does this answer your question?
D2a Td5 Manual, Chawton White. aka "Daisy"
    Build date 11th Oct 2003
Freelander 2 2011, manual, the daughter calls it Perri
Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.

    Welcome to the madness.
That is a pretty good/fair price for a well preserved 2003/4 TD5 auto, even without SLS or ACE.
Autos are pretty good in my view (same ZF 4HP22 as in Commodore and others) and will usually last on average about 250K km (mine is sitting on 275K and no issues so far - touch much wood).
Even though they have no dipstick, don't believe the story that they are sealed for life - do regular ATF changes. Auto will handle moderate reMAPS - I think up to a bit over 400Nm - others with more knowledge will chip in here.
I'd never go back to a manual. I expect to be in Margs later this week, but not in a LR, if you'd like to have a gasbag.
    Cheers Gavin

Thanks for the comments on the auto Gavin, that is what I really wanted. I was firmly converted to automatics for offroad a long time ago and my 79 Series has the A750F auto which had to be uprated to take 630nm. I only know of one other 79 that has an auto box, it was never a factory option. So, if I do buy the D2a, I'll have to look at the auto box down the road depending on what I do in terms of a remap etc. Well aware of the sealed for life issue, Toyota is the same with no dipstick. I've only done 100,000 on this engine and box but I changed the ATF at 50k.

Any comments on the LPG injection?

Would love to have a chinwag but I'm going up to Perth on Thursday morning to inspect the beast and won't be back until Friday afternoon. Another time perhaps?

    Cheers

Can't help with the LPG, although I always lusted after a unit, and the gurus here in Perth were positive in their comments, but the then $4.5K cost put me off.

I've come up with a mod to include a dipstick in my D2a.

Will be in Margs (Gnarabup) visiting daughter until Sunday AM if you would like to make contact - 0438 003 105. Also still trying to catch up with Pippin in Augusta.

    Cheers

I spent 5k on gas injection and it was nothing but trouble. Supposed to be the best Emer system but was constantly playing up not helped by the local installer refusing to honour any warranty eg on injectors failing after 12 months use. I removed it within 2 years. I also believe it can damage valves on some cars...

Gas prices r also mad here..nearly 2x Melbourne prices..so really don't make sense economically.

Btw that price is cheap for a low klm modern safe car..or you could buy a 25+ year old petrol Patrol or Yota clunker instead☺

From your comment I am assuming that you are talking petrol.

Diesel gas injection is often fitted to improve economy and is touted to reduce EGTs.

It is fitted to many stationary diesels such as Gen sets.

However if the wick is turned up it can add heaps of power to a diesel. Yes ! Yes!

The buyer would have to know what it was used for . If towing a monster van then I would be careful.
    Regards Philip A
The buyer could always sell it to me!

..yes should have said mine was petrol..but caution re using these systems still applies..eg our new (ha ha ) nissan td42t engine with 300k klms was on gas..and the valves and head are rooted... v fine cracks between valve seats..engine shop said typical of gas injection..and probably some driver abuse too!

Ps some truckies in Tas have gone away from gas injection due to poor economics and some engine damage. ..I'm quoting info per owner/operator of a large transport fleet here.

    Firefighters don't like them either😐
