Personally I wouldn't run it that far as I've found it pushes the pistons out of the brake callipers too far which exposes too much of the dust seals which then sometimes get wrecked by all the dirt and grim when 4WDing.
Easiest way to tell is visually - inspect them when you service every 10,000 to 20,000km and any other times the wheels are off. Some wheels can check them in place.
Brake fluid going down is also an indicator of wear, as the piston starts to sit further out the space behind it is filled with additional brake fluid which starts to reduce the level in the master cylinders reservoir.

HD Torque Converter
Since getting the HD Torque converter, I am definitely going through brake pads quicker. Makes sense, especially as I sit in the Warrandyte bridge traffic jam on a regular basis. I now change into low ratio so I am trickling along without using brakes when in a sizeable jam.
