Hey guys,
i got a long story with my disco 2 td5. First of all, we broke down, the engine was running, the car could rev but no power came to the wheels. the underbody was covered in oil. after an odyssey we got our drive and flex plate repaired, but now the car is only driving around 20 km/h max, it is probably stuck in first gear and there is like 40 percent of the power. the garage told us it is the whole transmission and it needs to be replaced or repaired. Did anyone had similar problems or could you tell me if the replacement/repair could be avoided somehow? if my non-professional brain forgot some info, feel free to ask.
cheers marc

Broken flex plate could allow the torque converter to destroy the autos input bush and seal causing the oil dump. Was this renewed?
Unfortunately loss of oil and continued driving could also have ruined the gearbox internals..ie the clutch plates etc
Likewise the torque converter running out of alignment for some time could destroy its internals as the gearbox shaft relies on the bush and correct flex plate and spigot mounting for alignment otherwise the shsft will pressure the converter internals causing damage.
Torque converters are very hard to find now (due to lots of failures across LRs and other makes..eg BMWs ?) but can be rebuilt for @1400 bucks....this might explain the loss of drive.
Mmmm...not what I found out when mine needed rebuilding last week. First I rang around and all said none were available off the shelf. Yes we can rebuild yours Sir but depends on what needs doing. If the TC has broken loose it will need cutting open to check for internal damage. Worst case scenario was 1400 plus GST. Which is what I referred to in my post if the guts is damaged and base plate also likely to be damaged..then there's the spigot hub which bolts to the flywheel which will require repair cause it will be slogged out if the TC has had the wobbles..none available new anymore..so I was told.
But it could be less eg if you are in the trade or the repair is simple. I would not recommend an Ashcroft unit because mine failed less than 2 yrs old. They admit they often fail.
Heavy duty units will need to be four bolt mounts which means more mucking around....but many have gone there already and this fixes the problem except you need to boost the engine cause the stall speed is lower😐
Ps. Auto Torque were by far the most helpful of the 4 I called.
i Suggest crawling underneath and finding out where the oil is coming from. Hopefully it is a broken transmission line. Then refill the transmission and see what happens after that. if the oil is coming out of the bell housing that may not be good ....
