    Td5 water pump noise

Answer: It's the new centrigual filter spinning down.

Had a coolant leak from the water pump on my 02 TD5 D2.

    Video here.
    YouTube

Put a new pump, orings and housing in as housing nipple was corroded and figured it was worth changing the pump while in there.

There is now a sound I hear for 10 seconds after I turn the engine off.
Sounds like either a shot bearing or the impellar is rubbing on the housing.

Is it normally for the pump to run down after turning the engine off like this?

Temps are good, mid way on the gauge, coolant flowing back into the resivour and I get a good fountain if I remove the bleed screw and run the engine, heater works, so all checks out apart from the noise.

Any ideas to prep before I pull it out and have a look. Wasn't a pleasent job to start with.

    All aftermarket parts.

    Thanks in advance.

Pump is driven from tab of the back of the power steering pump which in turn is driven by the belt. They cant run on. I believe you are hearing the centrifugal filter winding down. Which most do. Check that the lid is re seated properly on the filter, had experience of the same thing.

That makes a lot of sense and will be much easier to fix. Will have a look tonight. Cheers

It's not something to fix. It is normal.

That’s pretty noisy for the centrifugal filter isn’t?

Can confirm it is the centrifugal filter. I put a new filter in when I did the pump so that has also changed. Can't recall ever hearing it that loud before.

Atleast I know the filter is spinning.

I've heard cheap aftermarket filters make that noise ( unbalanced ) , but I've also come across the steel bush in the top of the housing missing which sound pretty bad as well
Use Mann or mahle filters, ryco can be OK too

    FIlter was a bearmach brand.

I'll have a closer look at the housing tonight.

By hand the filter felt smooth and span nice without the housing there, but obviously a different story at the higher rpm.

    All looks normal to me.
I can see the metal Bush in the housing so that's still there.

I'll replace the filter in the near future and see how it goes.
