Basically you need to do three (or four) things which require a diagnostic tool that can speak "Td5".
- Set the throttle configuration to match your existing pedal (2 or 3 ways)
- Load the correct injector codes for the engine.
- Learn the security code from the BCU - the engine won't run without this.
- If you purchase a NNN ECU, you also need to load the correct variant and fuel map for your vehicle (this requires a Nanocom, for the moment at least).

The scorch marks are from fusible resistor that seems to "let go" when one of the driver MOSFETS fails.
You can still power the ECU and access diagnostics with it in this state.

If you get hold of a Nanocom, my recommendation is to read and save the injector codes and throttle setting from the old ECU.
Then use the saved settings to program the replacement. It avoids data entry errors, and saves a bit of fiddling around.

Thank you for that info, I eventually figured out that I would need to reflash the box and started to look at what options were available .trying to decide between nanocon and hawkeye but I think your info means nanocom will be the best as it can store data on a sd card and reuse it where as that cant be done with the hawkeye which is a bit of a shame as I have a freelander 2 and the hawkeye will do both vehicles but the nanocom wont I have obtained a new MSB box

Hi Doug,

If you can read/program the current injector codes and relearn the BCU security code with the Hawkeye you should be fine.
Just hook up the old ECU read the injector codes, and note them down, then connect the new ECU and enter the codes, and learn the BCU security code. Throttle ways setting should be correct on an MSB.

Hi I am back with my new d2 after purchasing a new ecu and a nanocom . I have treid ti reset the security code but to no avail ,followed instruction on sheet supplied with nanocom for the learn security code function an it goes through the steps ok but when I check security status I get a message saying error cannot perform this function and the M&S lights flash .am I missing step or doing it wrong .

Did you buy the same part number ECU or if not what part number was the original ECU and what's the new one ?

the ecu I purchased has the same part number ,I purchased it from a forum member and he claimed it was new .I tried again this afternoon and went through some of the bcu settings and at one point it started and run for about 3 seconds .The instructions say to check in "other" for status of ecu , I eventually found "other" and the status is no flash but also says that ecu is robust . I am thinking ecu could be faulty . Also I could not read old ecu as when I plugged it in and connected the battery it started to burn .

I had had the battery on the charger before I started but I will try again with the charger connected . also at one point I managed to get a start and run for a couple of seconds

If the engine ECU refuses to lean the security code go into the BCU and set alarm to "not fitted" and passive immobiliser disabled then try to start the engine

I have tried all suggestions an still the nanocom will not read the security code even tried a different ecu . the auto trans warning lights are flashing ,not sure if that is causing problems also if the eka code is not correct or if the key fobs are flat could that cause problems . do I have to go through a correct sequence of opening the door the nanocom to do its stuff .I have a feeling I am missing something or not doing things in the correct order .
