ZF 4HP22 Td5 automatic transmission - how long did yours last before rebuild/replace?

Mine lasted 290,000km. Changed the oil and filter every 40,000km since I've had it (102,000).

Beware reversing uphill/ under load when they've got a few km on them, that's what did mine in as I was reversing a loaded 8x5 trailer up a hill a few times a week for 2 months
The sealing rings on the forward clutch wear and allow it to part engage still when reverse is selected, so you're trying to go forwards and backwards at the same time.
The forward clutch burns out because it is only partly engaged. The rest of the clutches looked great when I pulled it down, but the forward clutch was worn and burned.

312k, just died this morning [bawl]
Pulled up at a set of lights and everything was fine, go to pull away and just revs with no movement.
All the shift positions show up still on the dash but now its home I can here a slight momentary rattle when its in gear.

Got plenty of oil in it albeit a little brown but no signs at all, was driving beautifully...

Sounds like a broken flex plate.

i'm hoping that or the convertor, just had the Nanocom on it and turbine speed shows a big 0.

Ok, I take back what I just said [emoji23]

280,000 kms, lots of 4wdriving towing etc, pump seized internals stuffed sparg clutch destroyed, rebuilt it myself using parts from BMW trans and kit from the states.

Got the box back today. Fair to say it was pretty well cooked at 312k. Oil pump was the issue, quietly detonated and died but it aparently had been on its way out, lack of pressure was causing a small amount of slip in the clutc packs. Subsequently the oil looked like a pint of Guiness and it had only done 20k since its last flush...
New friction material, pump, all bushes & bearings, valve body kit and a custom low stall TC with an Ashcroft TD5 flex plate as I couldn't find a 3.9 convertor for love nor money.

Should be back up and running next week but I gotta say after sitting dormant for over 10 years, Clyde has just picked up where he left off and kept me mobile with only a small amount of TLC needed.

He's got a couple of bigger things that need addressing so once Bonnies back up and running he's getting a lot more attention. Got a heap of parts from the UK over the last few weeks so will now be able to get onto them.

my TD5 has 306k showing with original box. Still drives good in normal traffic. However people here in Christchurch seem to be driving slower and slower, driving 40km/h in 50km/h area and taking forever to get to 40km/h so will occasionally momentarily hang shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Just done a recent flush/oil change and filter using Valvoline Max Life, and do them approx every 50k. Resigned myself to the fact that the old girls gonna need a rebuild soon.
