I'm curious, how long did you get out of your ZF 4HP22 automatic transmission behind the Td5 engine before it required rebuilding/replacing?
250000 was juddering...
It'll be interesting to know what fluid everyone's been running, too.![]()
love my castrol transmaxZ![]()

D2 2004 TD5 Classic
--------------------------------------
360,000km.... was still ok but did it for peace of mind.
I'm on 280K and about to rebuild - nothing wrong with it, as confirmed by Dazza TD5 on here, but I'm about to haul a 3.5T brick across the centre of AU and back, and its a "just in case" exercise, given that it will have to be done eventually.
I tow not that infrequently, do quite a bit of country km, have an upgraded ATF radiator, HD TC and do regular ATF oil changes, plus have a Jose TD5Inside mild remap and oversize tyres (for the clearance man).
About to change over to a Defender LT230 to bring gearing back to about standard, and the D2a LT230 will go into the RRC LSE TD5 to replace the still working BW VC.

I’m at 285,000km on the original automatic transmission. Gear changes and performance as still perfect.
Since owning the vehicle at 180,000km I’ve done regular filter changes and fluid changes (filter not done every time) originally I used Castrol Transmax Z but use the Penrite ATF-FS now as easier to source.
I did change the torque converter prior to 200,000km which I wonder if that has lengthened the lifespan as I have read it’s the TC that usually fails first sending metal bits through the gearbox causing the other damage.
Father in laws D2a still on original box , 260k and towed a bloody big van around aus about 3 times. from what i am told it still performs faultless and uses whatever trans fluid that rovertech in WA fill it with. Only failure i know of is the oil lines were replaced at about 200k as they started to weep when they were going thru South Aust. He has owned it since new.
Cheers Ean
