Oh and does the thinner wheel with larger tyre when off road and pressure lowered have better performance?
Have just spent a waste of my life identifying the wheel style on my D2, well they are
SIZE : 8 J X 16 H2
PCD: 5X120
OFFSET :57
CENTRE BORE : 70MM
MAX LOAD: 920 KG EACH WHEEL

D1 style which is similar has the nut holes spread out and about 1" from the cap,
AND I think they are called STRATOS and it seems its a p38 wheel not a standard or optional on discovery 2 (?), then all sorts of names like hurricane and comet are out there in the Land Rover cosmos, I was wrong back on May 7 1975... This supports even more my theory this D2 was once all kitted out with bullbars (no headlight washer stuff now fitted), side steps and other 4WD stuff.
So the tedious stuff out the way, the thick thin debate is not for me, the 300 TDi is on 235 80's and am more than happy with the off road performance, bit squeamish on road around corners, but alright.
For the D2 TD5 I have decided on, still no absolute clarification that they are legal after reading the VSI guide to such matters, VSI No 8 Guide to modifications for motor vehicles.pdf
but the 265 70 16 seems my best bet for height at just under 31" and even a bit more rubber real estate on the road for what will be a daily driver over the 235

my learned peeps, as it seems most people run the 7" width tyre and to say there is conflicting reports of rubbing and clearance is somewhat of an understatement, (although will be in near future adding 50mm lift and putting back the rear Air bag suspension), my question is does the offset and the 8" size of the wheel have any bearing on potential rubbing / fouling as compared to the standard issue D2 7" tyre?

Like any number, my D2 runs 265 75 16 with a 50 mm lift. I do however have the 8" x 6 spoke Classic/P38 rims.
Main reason for responding is to say no rubbing, either on steering or articulation extremes.
Yes, the 265 75 are a "bit" over the 2 inch limit at about 31.7, and I think your 265 70 is good thinking.
I'll be doing the same when I retire (no pun intended) my existing Scorpions for the new ATR ineration - soon!
Thanks for the post

Thanks Gavin, assuming the offset is the same as mine at 51 (reputedly) or as noted here

this lists it as H or high, who would have guessed, a general offset irrespective of wheel width. Wouldn't they modify the offset dependent on wheel width? I say this because even with the 255 width standard with the 8" this takes it closer to the rub points that many talk about.
I'm no wheel boffin and until now never had to worry about this stuff, but the last thing I want is rubbing.
Yes. ...the track of a narrower taller tyre lengthens more than it widens = more tread/less sidewall on the ground + less frontal resistance.
I also believe this applies on road with tyres at recommended pressures. (Many who want the racing car, wide tyre, low profile ‘look’ will no doubt disagree). IMO Wider is not necesssrily better on a 4x4 (unless you’re in the Arctic but then your sidewalls would be massive too ).
Scared to go there Zero's LOL This is more contentious than Labour v Liberal v Green, Richmond v Collingwood v Carlton, Land Rover v Nissan v Toyota v Jeep or Courtney Cox v Jennifer Anniston....
Was thinking more along the line of the difference in having a 265 70 on either an 8" rim against how it performs on 7", my mind can contort the image of these together but how does it impact
- initially on any rubbing issue and then
- performance out on the tracks
What pressures out on the tracks would one reasonably expect, would primarily be looking at the high country and then maybe up around HATTAH mid to late this year - the group i have traveled with just put theirs down to 25 psi but a much more experienced $WD said he wouldn't run above 18 psi
I run classic 6.5 inch wolf rims on my Defender. Not sure if D2’s can run 6.5’s? ...if not I’d go the 7inch. The tyre sidewalls will be more vertical.
I'm no expert but Disco 2's generally came with 7" rims until towards the end of the model, when 8" rims were available and carried over to the P38.
Don't forget that only half of the extra width is on the inside, and I've never heard of any significant rubbing on full lock, although I am aware that most with 8" rims will wind back the steering stops as far as they can.

Zero's the more vertical tyre wall would be the 8" I thought, as the wider 10" plus width of 10.43" would bulb out on the 7" more than the 8" - sure bulb out is a technical term used by RR as well as LR engineers. In my research to date, have not seen a 6.5 on either D1 or D2 but then I keep seeing new information all the time.
Gavin, would not LR when fitting the 8" which was definitely an option as shown on the tyre placard with 255 tyres, have themselves put the steering stops in appropriate position to allow for the extra width of tyre, this is where the original specs can show the turning circles for the 7" shod versus 8" being adjusted for the adjustment??? Again without the appropriate verification it is all just supposition I suppose. ohh ohhhhh oh to have the specification sheets!
RRT,
I have those P38 16x8 wheels on a D2 on Kings 2" springs.
Currently shod with Kuhmo MT51 265/75 tyres. They rub on the radius arms at full lock.
Vehicle is an auto and they want to run a little too fast down steep descents.
But I still like the tyre size. The ride is great.
If I had my time again I'd have gone for 7" D2 alloys.
