    TD5 Aircond pump clutch

Can anyone tell me if there is supposed to be any friction material (pad) in between clutch plate? or is it just a metal plate for magnetic contact? how can i tell if it is worn and needs replacing, it engages no problem when switched on and off again
i have just replaced the clutch bearing as well no problem but dropped the spacer washer out on removing clutch outer housing spline and couldn't find it in the engine bay, i tightened it up without the washer set, and turned it on then it started to smoke and got really hot, so i used a small spring washer to shim it out temporarily which allowed me to tighten a little each time but unsure how close the plate has to be to prevent wear.
is there a guide or thread anywhere on proper spacing of the clutch?
this all came about after a very metalic sound, which got worse when the aircond was switched on,
i have replaced the tensioner, aircond bearing but now after reading on here it could be the crank pulley so would like to at least get the aircond clutch shimmed out and back to normal.
any help would be good. thanks

I did a Patrol ac unit last night and there was no washer between the outer metal plate...which presses onto the splined shaft and the pulley which is located by a circlip. The electro magnet plate below the pulley was loose tho.

Bearing damage can take out the windings due to heat etc.

Maybe the windings are shorting out?

..on top of the clamp plate or below it?

I've done a few if these and only seen a washer beneath the front bolt...sometimes captive to the bolt and lock washer.

    But your's might be different..

    thanks fir the info
when i pulled off the front plate there was a spacer inside the spline shaft, i have done a bit of research and found that it is a spacer to set the gap between the plate when it contacts and should be set at between 2- 4mm. the plate just looks odd but have a feeling there is no friction material supposed to be there, if i could see what a new one looks like i'll get a better idea, i will keep searching

TD5 air conditioning compressor missing front plate on the pulley

This thread may help. There are pictures in it and links to other related threads. The clutch parts are available and not badly priced. Good luck.

thanks for the link, yes mine looks the same although a few more scores on it, mine looks like a worn brake disc that needs machining.
