Thank you all.

After reading all the posts above, I have decided to buy another secondhand ECU. This is mostly because of what discorevy (Craig) has written. I will take Craigs advice as to to how the problem happened and that the capacitors were swapped over from the one that Craig loaned us to to our damaged one and that did at least did start again, but it ran like a hairy dog. So maybe it has more damage to the original ECU than first thought.
So, if any one has a spare working ECU for sale, Please let me know. I will post the details (part number ETC) of the ECU when I next go to my sons as it is there. IT is for a 2002 Landrover Discovery TD5
Hey Craig, do you mind lending your old ECU for a while longer until we get one?
Thank you all for your help.

no problem Gerry , let me know via text when you want to come round so I can transfer injector code data to the ecu as I didn't have time the other day, otherwise I have to come in to another workshop on Tuesday so could do it then.
you will need to bring your old ecu as well

From what I've seen there is no obd software for PC for the disco 2 and the only diagnostic tool that I have seen that can do remaps is the nanocom
