    Rear door subwoofer replacement

While sorting out the failing tall door hinge on my D2a < Tall door - top hinge out of alignment - sign of failure? > I noticed that the rear subwoofers have failed with the cone suspension foam breaking off.

Replacement genuine Land Rover subwoofers have a very high list price and not necessarily available. There were no listed OEM or pattern part options. I checked out the local car audio stores (including JayCar) and traweled the various brands websites, but couldn't find an easy to fit replacement until I found a thread on another Land Rover forum website which recommended these Goldwood GW-206/8 units as someone else had successfully fitted them (I can't find the thread now).

The Goldwood GW-206/8 subwoofers are a perfect fit into the housing and are priced well. Available from a range of suppliers including eBay, Amazon, Newegg, but PartsExpress < Goldwood GW-206/8 6-1/2" OEM Woofer 8 Ohm > looks to be the cheapest s USD $18.98 a unit plus freight.

A new Goldwood next to the original subwoofer. As you can see perfect fit and the factory screw holes line up:

The factory subwoofers are not marked with positive (+) or negative (-) on the wiring and the connector tabs are identical sizing, but the factory black wire is the negative and should be connected to the smaller negative (-) tab on the Goldwoods:

The only issue comes in that the depth of the Goldwoods is a bit shallower than the factory units:

This is an issue because it fouls on the hole in the tall door. I used a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade to enlarge the speaker hole in the tall door by taking off 10mm from the top (above where each subwoofer will sit) and right side of the hole:

End result is it all works pretty much like it used to. Lets be honest the factory setup is not that great anyway so I never expected it to be blowing the doors off or anything.

I'm now wondering what the condition of the side door units are. I think that they are a different speaker and only held in place by three screws.

    Nice work

Total Recoil in Melbourne reco speakers and recone them with Kevlar bla bla bla

You get back a better then original for a reasonable dollar.

I have the HK system and the rear subs are different as the HK died and I had a Philip’s version so I put that in. Doesn’t sound as good.

I am planning on sending mine to Boyd and getting a reco or custom job. Once I sort all the other issues on my tinkering list.

Welcome To Total Recoil Speaker Repairs
