 As in D3/D4 ?
From what I read, mainly harder to work on for us home spanner twirlers, unless you have a hoist.
If it's a simple head gasket, you should easily be able to do it, as long as you have the right tools.
Many folks will espouse the virtues of going with studs instead of bolts for the heads, but I have no opinion or experience with either(ie. can't help).,
Studs cost more and make it more of a job to do heads. Heads won't come out due to clearance, so motor needs to be moved.
For me this would be a deal breaker if I was to do just a set of heads in situ. In such a case, pulling motor to do heads just makes more work.
Cost is far less than 7K tho .. just for heads.
If you had the tools to do them, around 1K should get you going.
I was quoted 650 for getting the heads done, I think a gasket kit is about 200-ish.
Add a couple hundred for unexpected addons .. eg. maybe you discover a broken engine mount or whatever .. low $1K mark.
I was also quoted about $1100 to get the block relseeved/tophatted too.
And this is where you dilemma actually falls.
Not knowing what the problem is.
And I thought to get a borescope addon myself, but it won't tell you if it's a cracked block/sleeve issue, or a simple HG.
If a head gasket, for $1K .. on a good car .. you'd be mad not too to it(again, depending on condition of car).
Either way, if you do do it yourself, you would have to a block/sleeve leak test.
I've never done it, and now with the death of my current motor, I won't ever need too .. but plenty of info on how to go about doing a quick and dirty crack test.
The alternative is to get another vehicle(LR or whatever other make) .. and you may well be buying someone elses discarded issues too!
ps. for me, half the fun is in the work involved in keeping them running. Up until a little while back I was enjoying my Tdi a lot more when it gave me something to tweak, or look into.
(eg. I have a minute oil leak that can wait till I build my shed soon).
But over the past 12 months or so .. as all the niggle leaks, or rattles get sorted, there's less reason to go out and give it a check over, or something.
I'm soon resorting to fixing dads little Peugeot. Brothers Td5 has ceased all anomalous operations too. Last thing we sorted on his was a coolant leak ... or 5!(actually I think there were 3 all up).
