    V8 engine help/reassurance

    Good morning all,

I have trawled the forum for weeks but haven't been able to find anything which covers all of the issues i'm habing. I've recently bought a d2a v8 auto with 148k on the clock. It had a full service history up until the last 20k but it seemed to drive well so i decided to take a punt on it (likely a terrible idea).

I drove it home (around 1000km) and booked it in for its RWC which it failed for misfires - the plugs an leads were replaced, they were in a bad way. It seemed to fix the issue and passed the retest. Since then the mis is back intermittently on startup and i'm getting a white smoke from the rear when cold. There is a small tick when running.

idle is around 750 which I believe is ok for a D2 but on startup it idles around 1000 for 5 minutes or so. I've also had a visit from the oil pressure light (again on startup) but it was off the dash within a couple of minutes.

It is booked in for a complete service and proper inspection on thurs but it would be nice to get a heads up from the knowledgable heads in here so i'm at least semi prepped for the bad news. I'm not losing any coolant or oil and the fuel consumption seems average. once warm it seems to drive ok. The mrs also put a full tank of E10 in it....

My heart is telling me its servicing/timing/poor quality fuel issues but my head is telling me its something more sinister. Or have i just read too much and become overly paranoid ha!

Any advice/hugs/taps on the back would be hugely appreciated.

    Cheers!

Could be a number of things.

    Start here

Remove the spark plugs from the middle two cylinders on each side and look for moisture.

If any moisture this is not ideal.

You can also check the other four outer cylinders

Different schools of thought on E10 but I never had an issue with regards to economy, performance or noises.

(P.S. impressively low kms which is almost unbelievable)

The E10 wont do it any favours,, (mine pings on 95 and the Fuel Flap says 98....)
stick a tub of Octane improver in,, that will get rid of that as a fault,,
if the plugs and leads are new and correct then its the coils,,
ignore the startup oil light until you change oils,, (Penrite HP10 as a guide)
these 4L's do, sometimes, crack oil pump gears,,

Lost my d2 v8 to oil starvation due to a clogged oil pick up..common fault so i was told due to the valley gasket or other gasket delaminating. Wife saw the light but kept driving anyway😃

Would pay to pull the sump asap otherwise oil light visit could be the start of a 6k bill😐

    Evening all,

    Thanks for the heads up.

Managed to get a 10L of HPR10, filter and flush for just over $100 today so I’m happy for now. I’ll check the plugs when I switch the oil out tomorrow. Any big do’s or don’ts or is it just a straight change as usual?

Will also have the coil packs replaced Thursday when the full service is completed. Had a look at switching them - talk about a huge small job! Hopefully that’ll be the end of the mis.

Gutted to hear about your deceased Disco, fingers crossed I just pull oil out tomorrow ha.

    Cheers again!

(I’ll figure out how to multi-quote on the app soon)..

The oil/filter change on the D2 v8 is very streight forward, Just make sure you fill the new oil filter with oil before you fit it

Aparently,,, dropping an engine mount improves access quite a bit...
there are coil lead diagrams on here,, somewhere.

In all my years of driving LR.V8's and talking to people who repair them and on this forum I have never heard of oil pump blockage except very rarely for severe abuse ie letting oil changes go way way too long. Is your mechanic and LR specialist and did he say whether it was aftermarket gaskets/which brand etc. Very keen to hear about this. Cheers

    Hi
2 LR very experienced mechanics told me about the delamination of the valley gasket. One who supplies LR parts comnented that the type he supplied me was not prone to delamination. I'm unsure which one was as I know my engine had been worked on previously.. there were receipts for many thousands of dollars work in the glove box🙄

Anyhow when I checked the oil pick up was totally clogged with black gasket material and yes the vally gasket was fragmented in places. The engine had been reg serviced according to the receipts.

Could have been my unlucky run with the V8...it cost me heaps and I basically gave it away ..as you do😐

Anyhow...with a flickering oil light it would pay to check the pick up...or the cause could well be a worn out oil pump...another issue on high klm engines so I'm told...

They are not a good engine to own in my humble experience.

Thanks mate. Very interesting. As I say I have never heard of this but sounds like people using after market gaskets. The advice on here for valley gaskets has always been to use stock.

    Cheers
