You only need to supeglue in a few small spots for the oring to be held in place.
I use some dabs of superglue on my rocker cover gasket to hold it in place during installation.
Seems a great use of technology to me.
I also used grey sealant on my front cam Oring , by applying it inside the rocker box and it has held well for 5 years now.

My $0.02.
I recently (last 6 months) have done two water pumps on two separate Disco 2 Td5s. I went through the same umming and ahhing. My end conclusion was two brand new genuine Land Rover Pumps with the accompanying block to accessory bracket seal. I figured that if the originals had lasted 300 000+km on both Discos that new genuine ones would deliver the same results.
Price was the downside but it is a major component. In my way of thinking, you don't want something as critical as a water pump to fail whilst out on the tracks.
They are still going strong with no leaks.
I hope this is/was helpful!
