I have had mine nearly 20 years and now have upgraded to a D5, still got the old girl and will do cape York before parting ways with it, still take it for a spin but mainly stays in carport pluged into a solar panel to keep batteries topped up.
Another year passes and Charlie has now graced my garage for 7 years, so time for another update. It’s interesting to see that as they age, a number of members have traded up to newer Land Rovers like the D4 and a new generation of owners have appeared here. Sufficed to say I’m still pretty happy with Charlie, but I could be tempted by the new Defender in a few years time..... provided it has no major teething issues. 😊
So what’s happened? Not a lot really.
After the big trip last year the distance travelled was back to more sensible level of 12k, making a grand total of just over 210k on the clock.
Servicing was mainly focused on the routine, with a couple of preventative tasks. The transmission got a flush and filter change along with the transfer case oil, coolant and a new radiator top hose.
Plastic degradation continues and I replaced the cup holder in the dash that had broken and swapped the ash tray for another coin holder. An easy 10 minute job and now the cup holder and springs behind the trays work properly again. Next on the plastic restoration list will be the rain gutters and corner trims which are starting to crack. Not an immediate issue but as 2 corners are NLA, I’ll be grabbing whatever I can get.
Onto upgrades and mid last year I finally gave into temptation and fitted Ashcroft ATB centres to the front and rear diffs. A reasonable exchange rate at the time and impending GST changes facilitated the decision 😊. Auto Transmissions R Us near work fitted them and given Charlie’s age, they also replaced all the bearings and seals. The front axle seals were just starting to weep, so they got replaced as well.
As mentioned in an earlier post I’m pleasantly surprised by with how well they work. I quickly got used to the more positive self centering feel and was amazed as to how well he handled sandy tracks and beaches. Traction control doesn’t activate nearly as often and there is less wheel spin from a standing start in soft conditions.
Cheers
Steve

Graet reading.
In September I'll have my 5th year of ownership report, I have taught one daughter to drive in the manual D2 and I am teaching the 18 year old son to drive in this car. 92 hours and counting. I hope to keep the car to teach the other children to drive a manual. Another 10 years at least.
D2a Td5 Manual, Chawton White. aka "Daisy"
Build date 11th Oct 2003
Freelander 2 2011, manual, the daughter calls it Perri
Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.

Thankfully I'm past clocking up driving hours now, but you're doing the right thing, teaching them on a manual transmission.
At the time my daughter was not happy learning on a manual but now she reckons manuals are cool, principally because only she and one other boy in her social circle have manual licences, so its a badge of honour.
Cheers

Noice.
I'm only a newbie to D2's, just over two years in my life.
It only had 103,000km on it when I picked it up and I'll be keeping it for a while based on current usage.
