On my old D2a I used 210mm legs with one spacer and rhino HD bars. This made the top the same height as the back of the factory roof rails which meant I ran a basket supported by the 2 cross bars and rear part of the roof rails. Worked well.

Did the basket clamp down to original front rails or did they have cross rails
Definitely straps. Ropes come loose.
I agree, straps are definitely the go most times because they’re so easy to rig. The rope example was a way to illustrate how little clearance above the roof the OP would have, and that spacers are available to increase height. They would be advisable in any case to accomodate roof bar flex / load deflection when operating off the black top.
