Just on the inline thermostat , I fitted a Thor manifold to a 14CUX 3.9 in a 91 RRC.
I was able to have machined a hole/ledge and bolt holes into the front of the Thor to fit a 14CUX thermostat housing with a 88C thermostat.
The car mostly ran at say 88-90C with heat soak up to say 95C. The only time it ever went over 100C was up MT Pinnibar on a 35C day when it went to 104C and the electric fans cut in, triggered by the thermostat switch on the thermostat housing.
I suspect there is no room for that on a D2, but IMHO an in line thermostat but with the proviso of a bleed hole in the thermostat and even maybe a small hose from the manifold to the thermostat housing would be the way to go.( to give a temp signal in case there is stagnant water in the hose from the manifold)
I believe that BMW made them run hot for emissions compliance and some modern engines with better sleeve retention even run over 100C.

Thanks Phillip. I drilled a second small sensor hole in my inline thermostat and it has always sensed well and been stable. If I were in constant snow I would probably reduce that to the original sensor hole only so there was less flow when the stat was shut. Your suggestion is clever but i didnt do it. Next time it is apart for HG...Cheers
