The empty reservoir is a worry. Where did the missing coolant go?
I just recently replaced a thermostat for a lower temperature one and found the temperature was all over the place. I’ll now replace the viscous coupling and then reassess.
Engine was very hot to the touch this afternoon on the exposed rockercover. Water pipe from engine to radiator (with bleed screw) also hot to touch and radiator top similar but not as hot. Pipe from radiator to thermostat assembly on driverside of engine bay cold to touch. Also water overflow reservoir was empty. Started engine and filled reservoir with water, jet of warm water was immediately flowing into reservoir (prior to adding water).
Does this sound like a mis functioning thermostat?

Well old one out today and happily opened in pot on stove at about 89-90. So ... now what I wonder ...
any pipes disconnected recently?
some recent posts about wrong connections with Td5's

Replace thermostat yesterday and found fuel cooler pipe connected to dead end spigot where line to oil cooler ought to be connected. Rest all in correct spots and the old thermostat show working ok in water pot on stove. New thermo is 78 degree model. All seemed ok today on longer run although noticed water down in overflow (was about 1 lt down) so refilled (might just be air bleeding through despite me following usual coolant filing method).
I have recently installed a new 78 deg Thermostat and found that the motor temp constantly cycles between about 85 to 95 degrees (Nanocom) in about a five minute period. Surely this is too high for cold weather driving with the AC off. My old thermostat used to sit on 92 degrees in cold or hot weather. Is this a bad thermostat or something else? I suspect the thermostat is sticking and not opening properly. Does this sound likely.

The whole idea behind LR's cooling/heating is "blend".... so NO temp spikes or sudden changes, even under hard use the rise should be gradual...
so if the temps are actually cycling up and down,, something is amiss...

Yes, this is my understanding also. I can only think of the new thermostat causing this.

Are you sure that you have the hoses around the correct way?
My 2002 EU3 rests around 82-85C nearly all the time, with a sojourn up to 88-90C up a big hill while towing.
This is on a digital gauge which I have checked correlates to Nanocom within 0.5C.
Only ever been to 100C once with my old radiator, a faulty VC bearing pulling up The 21KM Alpine Way towing 1000Kg.

Whoops looked back and V8. Mine is TD5. Even so cycling is a worry.
What temp themo state you got Philip?
