Maybe bacause of the Cat in the downpipe on the later TD5's
Hi all,
I'm wanting to know why my 04 Td5 disco doesn't have the turbo noise/whistle audibly emerging from the exhaust...
In a previous life I had an 02 disco Td5 (10p engine) and it whistled while it happily idled.
My new toy, the 04, (16p engine) has had the centre muffler replaced with the straight thru pipe, and it runs fine with plenty of power, but there is no whistle from the exhaust?
I'm trying to work out why this is so. Some YouTube clips I've watched, have discos with centre muffler removed, and they still whistle.
I'm not lacking power/boost or anything, so I'm perplexed as to why? I'm just trying to establish why the whistle isn't apparent at the rear end of my beloved beast...
Is there anyone else with a similar first world problem, or is it just Moi?
Thanks,
Cheers,
Mark.

Agree with Slunnie mine has no cat but has the centre box and whistles a merry tune at idle

exhaust whistle can be caused by a number of things...
but are you talking about turbine whine or a whistle proper? the latter is caused by an exhaust leak if you hear it only in the engine bay or by exhaust flow past a lip or dag inside the pipe so may only occur at certain speeds and loads

When mines whistled it’s been because of an exhaust gas leak at the exhaust manifold. Not a positive thing.
No female TD5's about?
Be grateful. My new toy, the 04, (16p engine) has had the centre muffler replaced with the straight thru pipe, and it runs fine with plenty of power, but there is no whistle from the exhaust?![]()
I cannot understand why it would whistle at idle as that is when there is the least exhaust flow.
Mine has never whistled with or without cat. I think it may be an exhaust leak somewhere along the line , not at the manifold.

actually mine "moans" just off idle when accelerating.
Hi guys,
On the first of the S2's there is a definite turbo whistle from the exhaust. Not a leak or anything like that, it's an audible replication of what the turbo is doing.
Plenty of YouTube clips to verify.
As mentioned, it's not an issue as such, I was just curious as to why it's not the case on my 2a. It's all good.
The replies regarding the catalyst make perfect sense, as that would obviously muffle the finer points of audio from the tail end.
Perhaps I should be naughty and remove the cat.I did love that audible representation of the turbo from the bum of the beast.
Just sayin.
Thx everyone.![]()
Brothers TD5 whisltled very obviously when he got it.
It was heavily modded by a previous owner, with all the gear that it came with, and later we found out it had a TRS remap too.
But two of the mods PO had, were monumentally whingy muddies(cheapos too), and the straight through exhaust.
Bro got KO2s which (comparatively speaking) produced zero tyre noise .. so then all you could hear was exhaust drone(wayyy too obnoxious for cruising).
With the KO2s now, and still the muffler-less straight thru exhaust, you could still easily hear the turbo whistle in cab, more so from outside.
Because of the very high fequency nature of the whistle tho, it was almost an annoyance.
But then he got a non restrictive centre muffler(but still no rear resonator), and the turbo whistle lessened by a lot more than I'd have expected it too.
If you concentrate, you can hear it from inside the cab, but nothing like it used to be.
I remember when I got my Tdi, I thought the turbo was stuffed, felt like it was barely doing anything.
In the first week, took it to my mechanic for him to 'check it out', he said change the muffler.
I did so next day, and straight up I could then hear the turbo whistling just driving out the muffler place.
Arthur.
All these discos are giving me a heart attack!
