    Which Oil to use

    Morning all,

This question comes as a result of a conversation that I have had with a Land Cruiser mate of mine who is also a mechanic.

I have been putting 5W-40 full synthetic in my D2 when completing oil changes, as per the manual and recommendation from a local LR dealer.

My mate is telling me that 5W-40 is to thin to be used in Australian conditions and I should be using either 10W or 15W-40.

My question is what oil are other in the forum using? and am I shortening the life of an already older engine by using 5W-40 as my mate tells me I am.

    Cheers

    Matt

    Which Oil to use

Hi Matt - Rick will post details showing the winter rating 5W or 10W is irrelevant once the oil is up to operating temp.

So either 5W-40 or 10W-40 is fine.

Be wary of using a 15W-40 in winter or very cold climates as this can be too heavy from a cold start - at least until the oil warms up.

According to this chart, 5W40 is good from -30C to +40C
    I use 10W40 to cover from -25C to +45C
Does the engine oil get much hotter if the outside temps are hot? I would think that the cooling system takes care of the heat.

And a mechanical really should have a better understanding of oil ratings IMHO. Its the basics of oil...
