    Looking for help/advice/opinions

    Hi all.
Since I bought my 99 td5 it has had an issue with it surging while in 3rd,4th & 5th from about 2800rpm and above (give or take). Ive read and read that most causes are the MAF and waste gate. I seemed to solve the surge issue by squirting the waste gate with some WD40. I tested the MAF with a multi meter like seen in tutorial on youtube and seemed to test fine (I wouldnt know ****).

I took it to a mechanic for a general look over etc. the mechanic hasnt had much experience with D2s and ran into quite a few problems which are unrelated to this (ill save for another day, goodbye $2k). The mechanic Identified a huge split in the boost hose closest to the turbo. So I replaced this and the surging returned even worse. I tried driving with the MAF unplugged, squirting the waste gate again etc. None of that worked. After some fiddling I unplugged the AAP sensor on the side of the airbox and this solved the surging (except very occasionally- its done it once since when I was towing up a huge hill). So im driving around with this sensor unplugged. My D2 is very slow and seems to lack power. it could very well be normal for this car but im not so sure. pulling the single axle trailer to go camping was very slow.

I have freed up the waste gate so that has eliminated that.

So... What do people think? Im thinking ill replace both the MAF and AAP sensors. Do people think this is the likely cause?
Im not able to get buy a the same sensor - MHK100600L brand new. Apparently they are obsolete! The land rover guy down here said he can get the MHK100820L which is for the Euro 3 models. is this compatible?

The mechanic said If I need to start looking at the fuel system etc. id probably be better off moving it on.

Any sort of info/advice would be appreciated. Im gunna try and get some money together to get it to a LR guru but Ive just shelled out thousands right on xmas, so im just trying to get by atm.

    Cheers

I'm going to say I think that you are looking in the wrong place ( just my opinion ). TD5s are actually pretty reliable, with a few caveats. Have you checked the injector wiring harness? They are notorious for getting oil in them which winds up in the ECU. i now consider this to be an annual service item. Dunno if it would cause your symptoms but check it anyway.

Next to the A/C compressor there is the controller for the waste gate. Mine cracked one of its pipes as they get brittle over time. You can bypass it, temporarily at least. See if that helps.

    Is it auto or manual?

"The mechanic said If I need to start looking at the fuel system etc. id probably be better off moving it on."

Get another mechanic. The fuel system is actually quite simple. It ain't a common rail, its just a pump in the tank and injectors controlled by the ECU. Simple and reliable, except the injectors are coded.

When the bank balance recovers buy a Nanocom. There's usually a group buy on here for a discount. Nanocoms are kind of weird but they are amazingly functional things. I REALLY wish I hadn't sold mine, as I now have plans for my D2.

Just a few thoughts. There are people here that know a LOT more than I do.

If still in Tasmania, go see Justin Cooper in Kingston. He is the guru's guru.

Also sounds a lot like overboosting and programmed cutting out on overboost. Has the boost been wound up to compensate for the split boost hose? Repairing that hose would logically make the oveboosting (so surging) even worse.

Justin Cooper in Hobart would be your man.

...I have freed up the waste gate so that has eliminated that....
IMO first suspect would be the wastegate modulator www.discovery2.co.uk / Waste Gate Modulator - Over boosting

Not good for Eu2, the MHK100600L is not obsolete, stil available online but very expensive, search for "Rover MHK100600" as alternative
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned

That's the puppy. Little box next to the A/C compressor?

Thanks for the responses guys. Had a split water hose on friday night so had to fix that on saturday. Thought I was good to go then the bugger broke down half way to nowhere. The engine is seized and wont start.
Im really not winning this battle atm.

Shes getting towed to Justin Cooper tomorrow.
