    What's in an engine mount?

I changed engine mounts a while back and just got the chance to dissect one of the old ones to see how they fail (droop).

Here are some pics that hopefully are clear enough for everyone to see what's there. (The damper diaphragm is missing from the 'assembled' photo)

Some interesting features (hopefully my descriptions are understandable):
    - There appears to be an oil sealing groove between the support rubber top surface and the mounting bolt flange under surface.
    - The damper diaphragm seems to be designed to vary damping rate compared to just having (a much simpler) fixed hole design.
    - I was lucky enough to make the cut ideally to see the pop rivet used to seal the oil filling hole.
    - There would be a number of steps in the manufacture of this thing.

Anyway, I think the mount support rubber just sags until the engine support bracket that fits to the engine mount top bolt is resting on the rubber coated upper assembly cap, and this would take the engine weight and vibration directly through the outer body of the engine mount and bypass the damping system.

Now let's hear what the brains trust out there thinks.

Looking at the way these are built (like a brick dunny) it is a wonder that they fail at all.
Thanks for the post, I never realised just how"Robust" the engine mounts are in the D2

    The TD5 needs them!
The NVH when they drop are, interesting.

The smoothness and quietness with new ones are lovely. What's in an engine mount?

For what they are Des, they are reasonably priced.
And you need the 'Made in Germany' 'genuine' ones.
The copies are apparently worse than useless.

Thanks Rick, glad to know that, but rest assured I am not about to buy one (or even two) Just curious as to price & they do appear to be well constructed but not too well or they wouldn't fail, let alone explode all over the floor like the images shewn.

Just looking at Karcrafts price list, they're a bit over $200ea for an LR or OEM mount.

Old type rubber block style engine mounts are a lot cheaper, but D2/Def Td5 mounts are comparable or cheaper than other modern type engine mounts as LR has worked to improve the NVH levels. Some of the L322 mounts are $300-340, but a Tdi Disco/Def mount is $30-40... there is a big difference in them.
    Cheers
