2003 TD5 Auto
Hi to all,
I tried starting the disco yesterday and when i turned the ignition key accesories came on like normal, then when I tried to crank it, absolutely nothing apart from a relay click in the dash. When I release key, I can hear the relay click off.
Batteries are good.
I've tried starting in both Park and Neutral.
Any ideas spring to mind? TIA

It’s the smaller barrel shaped thing on top of the starter motor which is at the rh rear of the motor. The rh is the drivers side.
a new set of contacts is cheap and readily available on eBay but you have to remove the starter to fix it which is a PITA.
there are many how tos for this on the forum.
however before doing anything I would get a mechanic to look at it as there are quite a few other possibilities such as bad earths and faulty ignition switches.
but thesolonoid contact failure is very common with high mileage D2.

First of all check the spade connector on the solenoid cos it used to not make contact there... usually when the contacts in the solenoid are gone you still have to hear a louder clunk from the starter area when the plunger is activated. Also you can try to hit the starter with somehing cos there ar cases when the brushes are sticking

Oh you are referring to the actual starter motor solenoid. I doubt it is that as I replaced the starter with a brand new one about two years ago.
There is no loud click from the starter when I turn the key.
The clicking I hear is from a relay, when I turn the key, in the dash board somewhere.
Any other ideas?
You have to measure if you get voltage with ignition on crank on the solenoid feed wire... that lucar connector is weak even if the starter is new
