long range fuel tank and fuel gauge.

am i correct in thinking that if my discovery has a long range tank fitted it should make no differance to the fuel gauge from standard,The pump therefore the guage would be at the same depth of fuel as standard the tanks are just wider.the old owner told me that the gauge hadn't been calabrated for the new tank, dosn't seem correct or am i missing something.

While you would think so, it ain't necessarily so.
Our Defender has a 120 litre long range tank fitted. The fuel gauge does not move until we have done between 400-450kms, depending on driving style and if we are towing.
I assume the sender was not relocated when the previous owner had the tank fitted.

Yup. My D1 does the same with LRA tank fitted. Doesn't move the gauge needle at all for about the first quarter tank burned and then creeps down slowly after that. Low fuel warning and empty on the gauge are about right though, and they are the important ones

cant see how it could be as the sender is part of the pump assembly. if the float is at its lowest then the gauge should read empty etc etc.Guess i will have to pull the pump and check were the float is in relation to the bottom of the tank.

The full reading obviously depends on "how full", is full. My standard 95litre tank can accept over that when there is still 10litres in the tank. Most people, me included, utilise the ullage consideration for storage, fine if the fuel is going to be used immediately.
At least my Disco's fuel gauge doesn't race the tacho across the dash, unlike some V8s I've owned.

My Defender doesn't have a fuel pump in the tank.

When the long range tank goes in, the sender on the pump has an extension welded into it which makes the gauge read correctly. When the pump gets replaced, the float arm has to be swapped over to the new pump to retain the proper calibration of the fuel gauge otherwise it will read wrong.
    Cheers
