Borrow Hawkeye for D2 Td5 in Melb Metro? - diagnose high shift points and other misc

    Hi all

I've recently acquired an auto 1999 D2 Td5 which is bringing me much joy but also came with a number of obvious issues (raining inside) but also things that need further diagnosis.

One hot ticket item is the auto transmission behaviour, the engine seems to rev quite hard before gearing up under normal driving conditions. I've read on AULRO that the expected shift points should be roughly around 25kph 1>2, 38kph 2>3, and 60kph 3>4. In 40 zones my puppy remains in 2nd and gets to 2500+ revs and quite rattly (another rabbit hole) but does not clutch up to 3rd unless I ram it to ~45kph, and then drop back to 40. Under steady acceleration, when shifting between 1>2 or 2>3, the revs only drop marginally and usually remain over 2000 which does not seem right from what I've read.

A friend suggested the car may be stuck in Sports mode despite not registering on the dash. From switching between modes while driving in the city, I can't say that I can notice much of a difference so I feel like this may be a potential culprit. In either case, I need to take a dive into the computer with a diagnostic tool, for this and other reasons. I am planning on buying a Hawkeye or Nanocom soon but given the state of intercontinental freight at the moment, I'd like to have a look into it sooner than that.

Is there any AULRO member in the Melbourne Metro area with a Hawkeye I could borrow for a spin?

    Much appreciated.

Does the sport light come on when you press the button?

If so it is unlikely to be the issue, and no, there isn't a lot of difference between the modes in high range, especially if there are other auto problems, I think from memory that delayed gear changes can be symptomatic of problems with the valve block -- this would be worth searching on AULRO for.

    Cheers

Gearing changes quoted sound more like that which apply for the petrol V8. TD5 changes into 4th at about 80 kmph in standard gearing/tyres format.

The TD5 is a smallish engine and the gear changes are set to utilise the torque, otherwise they'd be even a wee bit slow(er) to get up and running.

    Hi Gavin,
I think you're recalling that the Td5 auto drops into converter lockup at about 80 km/h in 4th. The actual 3>4 up-change happens at about 60 with steady acceleration.
Sorry OP, I have a Nanocom but nowhere near Melb...

That's correct Leo, the Td5 locks up at about 82kph and gears up into 4th around 60kph.

@shack: Yes the Sport light does come on when pressing the Mode button. I'll look into the valve block, thanks for the advice.
