    'A' pillar exterior trim

    Hi All,

Lady Daphne II (MY03 DIIA) is running great since her 'for reasons unknown' air filter element disintegration. But a couple of weeks ago a fair size stone hit the 'screen high on the driver's side, then ricocheted into the 'A' pillar exterior trim panel. The trim is now loose at the top and rattling.

Haven't tried to remove it completely yet but, pulling the 'screen side rubber strip down for 100 mm or so at the top, I can see a curved steel tab from the pillar that looks like it should engage with the trim. However, I can't see or feel any suitable tab on the trim and can't get it to clip back on.

Can't find any mention of this trim panel in RAVE. Can anyone tell me if it sounds like I have a busted trim and need a new one, or do I just need to adjust that steel tab a bit to get it to re-engage?

    Thanks for suggestions.

Have you removed the 3 rivets on the inside of the pillar. Open door and you see three rivets. bit of mongrel to remove, some may be hacked beyond reuse.
Once these three rivets are out, you need to force trim piece from that inner edge sidewards/out and over the pillar. May feel like the trim will break, but once half off the retaining clips along the windscreen edge of the trim will come free.

That tho is assuming everything is in original condition, and not siliconed down by a previous repairer due to breakage of everything.

On my part D2, the drivers came off OK, most retaining stuff broke, but the cover wasn't siliconed down.
But I just tried to remove the passengers side, and it just wouldn't budge sideways/out and over because the trim was siliconed down hard at the windscreen side edge.
Problem is you can't slide a blade down the side due to the ridge, so only way to remove is to break the trim into tiny bits!

Here's British Atlantic's video on how to do it .. but noting that their method assumes yours hasn't been glued down.
You can get the clips if yours are broken/weak.
One of mine on the RHS was rusted weak non usable, but of the 6 I had all up I had 3 usable ones to do the RHS on my D2 project.
But the LHS I wanted as a spare had to get destroyed to figure out if it had to get destroyed to get it off(if you know what I mean).
    Arthur.

a possible catch with the plastic rivets.
Some may be the type you push the central pin inwards and then pull the entire rivet out.
But on both of my D2s, 99 and 00's, they were the type that had a philips central screw that could be unscrewed. On some rivets it unscrewed, on others no hope, so the entire rivet had to be extracted with various types of tools like a sharpened centre punch, fine pliers, screwdriver and such like.

Just pull it off and then glue it back on with Sikaflex.
If you have a broken screen at any stage the fitter will 100% just glue it back on when they break the tabs.
I copped a stone right in the middle of the trim which broke it in half and that is what I did ,as I bought one second hand without the securing tabs.
Mine has now been back on for about 3 years no problems. That Sikaflex is good stuff.

Easy said .. not always done tho.
Like I posted, mine was so securely glued on, dunno what compound used, but impossible to break it off ... the trim chattered before the glue stuff peeled off.
If you could get under the trim(which you can't) to cut the glue with a blade, probably could have saved it. But as mine was, no hope.

Never actually used the stuff, although I have used Sika branded adhesives for conrete and some other silicon sealants and stuff.
But the stuff on my D2s LHS pillar is very very hard for a silicon sealer type stuff.
And if this specific stuff is sikaflex, the it's name is completely wrong .. it's not very flexy .. sikastiff would be more appropriate

my drivers side just flew off one day driving along at about 110/120 and by the time I realised what the black thing was that I saw in my mirror was I was so far down the road a search couldn't find it.

I repaired it with a thin aluminium strip and some black tenacious tape that a mechanic put me onto and laid the tape over the pillar and trimmed it with a scalpel. Rolled it down after trimming and was still there 3-4 yrs later when I sold it. It was so neat you could hardly tell it was bodgy.
