    Aftermarket Sunroof - Warped Headboard

    Howdy

I am doing some work on roof leaks at the moment and just stripped the headboard off in my D2. The car was fitted with an aftermarket sunroof 2 owners ago, and the last one told me that due to the fact that it is an aftermarket conversion, the headboard had to be bent out of shape to accommodate the internal tray. From looking into the cavity between the headboard and the roof while I was stripping it, it appeared that there was a significant void rather than the headboard being made to bulge down due to the guts of the sunroof. The sunroof is a Hollandia, a quite old model as far as I am told, and it retracts back inside the roof into a tray.

I am thinking this may have been a shoddy install rather than a necessary casualty of the aftermarket conversion, but I'd appreciate some comments before I hunt down a replacement headboard from a wrecker and get chopping. See photos below, the board dips quite a bit from behind the first row seats until roughly half-way through the rear sunroof concave part in the board. Unfortunately it is not easy to capture in stills, especially with the slight sag in the headlining - but it is definitely apparent in the car.

    Any comments appreciated!

Yes I can see your issue but cannot help other than to say that I approached an installer to fit a pop up / removable sunroof and he refused because of the problem of integrating with and the unavailability of finishing trim to suit the Discos solid fibreglass roof lining. He said anything less than a factory instal in these vehicles was unsatisfactory and not a commercial result ...Aftermarket Sunroof - Warped Headboard

    I see.

I've just spoken to a D2 specialised wrecker over the phone, who advised he had never heard of such an issue, and therefore believes it was a shoddy install. Having said that he has a stake in this as if he is correct, I would be inclined to buy a headboard from him...

I hope it goes well for you. My experience related specifically to a non standard accessory as in a pop-up sunroof which are pretty much a generic non vehicle specific item. I imagine it is likely to be a different situation with aftermarket retractable sunroofs.

Basically a retractable aftermarket electric sunroof has a long tray that stays underneath of the roof and above the roof lining (headboard). In case the depth and width are not matching the roof lining in a D2 then an amateur installation would result of what you show in the photo. I suggest you remove the roof lining first, then create a nice and smooth custom cover for the whole tray, then cut the roof lining to the matching cover and put the roof lining back there. Final step would be asking a professional roof liner to make you a custom roof lining which I see it is not very hard for them but might be slightly more expensive than doing an original D2. This would make you a nice roof and easy for maintenance in the future too.
