    Cold air intake install

A couple of weeks ago I bought another air box with the intention of making another air intake for the airbox for onroad use.
This was because virtually all of the tuners in UK say that they do not recommend a snorkel when a tune is done with exhaust, big intercooler etc.
So basically i have drilled another intake hole in the bought airbox and added some additional air holes in the radiator support and headlight can, although I think enough air will get in through the crack in the headlight.
The idea is to use this when I am mainly driving on bitumen and revert to my stock air cleaner box when going on a long trip where I expect water or dust.
I sealed the gap between the filter box and the radiator support with some draft excluder and then used aluminium flashing to complete the seal.
The holes are 2inches in diameter which should be fine to give extra air especially considering that the front is a high pressure area.IMG_1452.jpg
It is pretty tight back there but you will see where I have drilled the holes without disturbing any earths or the aircon pipe.IMG_1453.JPGIMG_1461.JPGIMG_1462.jpg

It is pretty early but seat of the pants gives a little more at say 3000Rpm up , but it could be my imagination.

I'm curious: IIRC the TD5's have an ambient air temp sensor in the airbox.
I guess you have a nanocom to get before/after readings to see if it really did help to lower air temps.

Also if it did lower temps, are there follow on differences say in turbo pressure or exhaust temps or something.

I contacted Allisport some time back and enquired about a VGT and they also said, if you have a snorkel, no warranty on their products.

Really not the issue as the intake is sealed from the engine bay so air comes in from the front around the headlight. This is sealed from the radiator inlet by a deflector. Could be an issue in the Kimberley at 40C I guess, but there I will revert to stock.

More the issue is that there is a pressure drop from the snorkle at higher revs.

I was first alerted to this in an LRO test a few years ago when they tried to get the fastest quarter mile time in a Disco and made gains as they fitted a big intercooler, removed the EGR, did a stage 1 retune, fitted a Honda cone 2000sports air filter , then removed the LH headlight.

AFAIR they got no gain with the Honda cone air cleaner , but 2MPH with the LH headlight removed.

Further evidence from the UK tuners re the warranty .
Just a little project to while away the time. I did this with my RRC also with the drum air cleaner and made up a fibreglass cold air duct that went through the radiator support. seeing the D2 has a rubber seal on the headlight to improve the pressure drop across the radiator I didn't want to compromise that. The D2 also has a deflector behind the grille to seal the radiator aperture thus the holes in the grille on the outside of the deflector.

I imagine that I can feel quite a difference at 3000RPM and above.
My thinking is that with more air in , the EGTs may lower a bit.

Actually I have taken the stock "hiclone" out of the aircleaner. If you take the trouble to look up the tube of a stock aircleaner you will see a hiclone there, designed to fling water and dust collected from inside the mudguard into the duckbill. Hardly necessary with a snorkle and undoubtedly a pressure drop source.

Interesting they don't like snorkels. Does a snorkel really cause air pressure drop? I would have assumed it would push more air in, raising air pressure, but what would I know?

It would be interesting to have an air pressure meter in the lower half of the air box, then do a few runs with the snorkel inlet face forwards and then back wards. Mind you, at low range speeds, on the ganrly stuss the difference would be zero.
