    Diff lock not engaging

    I have a 2003 Disco
My diff lock shift lever will not engage. So not being a gorilla I thought I'd try and fix it. Next mistake start doing it on the coldest day ever in Brisbane.
I removed the transmission tunnel cover, after breaking one of the 6mm bolts which secures the shifter lever to the cover panel (LR must have had shares in Loctite with the amount they used on these bolts) Anyway after accessing the two cables I disconnected them from the shift mechanism and removed that along with the cable that controls the diff lock.
The cable was not seized, which was what I expected. And when I used a socket onto the nut on top of the transfer case the diff lock functioned smoothly and brought up the light in the dash. Two for two so far.
The shift mechanism moved back and forth easily, but would only shift in an out in a neutral (central)position, but that was very smooth. Is it only supposed to shift in that cental position? As I thought you should be able to shift it with the lever either forwards or back (ie high or low range)
Anyway i thought even if that was how I had to use it that would be fine.
Next step fix the cable to the shift arrangement on top of the transfer case, and turn the nut again to check the cable moves smoothly, even with a tight bend in the cable,It will.
Reassemble everything and fit the cover back over the transmission tunnel.
Try to shift the lever. Back to being solid.
Please anybody what have I got wrong. Is there some secret adjustment that needs to be done?
The workshop manual I have on the RAVE disc has a blank page for adjustment.
    Any assistance would be appreciated

There's two nuts on the end of the cable carrier which is put through the positioning bracket. By moving where these two nuts come together on the thread fixes the position of the cable carrier on the bracket. This then sets the range of motion of the cable relative to how you move the handle. (I take photos when removing it so I can put it back exactly as it was, same amount of thread on either side of nut). Sounds like this is the first time you've tried to engage the CDL? If there is no bracket which fixes the position of the cable relative to the adjustment arm....then you'll have to sort this out. With the testing you've done it should be the adjustment, but if it worked before, not sure....as you, I would have gone broken cable. You can do the adjustment from under the car...

    Thanks for the feedback.
You are right it was the first time I tried to use the CDL. Long story short I was told this car didn!t have a diff lock, just the wrong handle on the lever.
When I reassembled the cables I did put them back in the same place as removed, but now ftom what you suggest it would seem that over the years an incorrect adjustment has been made and never corrected.
I'll have to leave it to next weekend now, but I'll definately try an adjustment.
    Again thanks

2003 has cdl,, un-informed mumptys, or, a quick con perhaps..

anyway, the light on the dash is the true indication of in or out,,
CDL's are a use it or lose it thing, ( as you've found out) should get three boings when taken out,, but it wont actually be out untill the dash light goes out,, so do it well before any hard surfaces..

If the light comes on then you have a cdl.
Should work if in the forward or central positions.
Sounds like Mort may have the answer.
    Good luck!

I will engage the CDL at any occasion. No matter how smooth the dirt road is. You can engage and disenage whilst on the move. I think upto 60kph.

    Thanks for the comment
The one thing I'm still not clear on at what position the lever has to be in to engage the lock
With the lever mechanism completly removed from the truck, it will only shift the lock lever shaft when the handle is ,in a vertical position, move it any other way and its rock solid.
What I'm asking is: if the transfer lever is in either high or low position should you be able to shift into diff lock from those positions as mine appears to only work in a neutral position?
If you are supposed to be able to do that, what has caused mine to be broken when it shifts so smoothly in that neutral position?
I still have to adjust the cable as per the earlier post, but this thing keeps nagging me.

All the ones I've seen or had can be locked in both high and low range.

I can recall that if you FIT a CDL lever to a manual you have to open up the hole in the console top to allow the lever to swing across.

It should move left in all transfer case positions.
    Is yours a manual?
Maybe someone has fitted an earlier console top. Stranger things happen.
I cannot remember whether I had to cut the console in my auto when I fitted the lever.
D2A had CDL in Australia but not UK where it was an option. Is yours a private import?
    Regards PhilipA
