Thread: Another intercooler question

When I did this, I replaced the LR oil cooler with an Aeroflow oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator. Very easy to extend the existing hoses - I just cut the existing hose line and used hose barbs to join some additional transmission oil hose. You will find space to feed the hose through to the front.

Thanks for this pointer. I need to pull the front end off and take a look at where everything sits. RAVE diagram is fine but until I look at it in place it probably won't make much sense.

Just pull the front grille off. Plenty of access at the front to see where to mount the new oil cooler.

I made up a cardboard mock up for the new oil cooler before I bought it to work out the best size and fitting location. You will want an oil cooler with a larger surface area than the original. I ended up mounting it down low and at an angle to get the airflow from below the front bumper cross member.

Getting the old IC out is a bit tricky. Plus if I recall correctly you will have to cut off the old oil cooler mounts as well to fit the new IC.

Thanks again. Something to keep me busy on a wet weekend! I'll report back when I eventually do the job, possibly with a few photos.

I would say a definite yes. I recall bottom end performance was much stronger, and of course a remap will definitely benefit from the larger IC.

I don't think it would make much difference on a stock map.

The reason for the intercooler is to lower intake air temperature and subsequently to lower EGTs.
This becomes more important as any map will increase EGTs greatly.
The intercooler and cat delete are to keep EGTs at reasonable levels under load like climbing a hill while towing where even with my Serck cooler I can easily exceed 750C without driving by the EGT gauge. An Increase in boost will also reduce EGTs .
A byproduct is that it helps acceleration.

You might also consider fitting a water cooled oil cooler of the style that LR has fitted to all later vehicles. The coolers don't occupy much space, don't require airflow but would need to be plumbed into the cooling system appropriately.
