D2 transmission leak

Hey all,
New to the forum, I am looking at buying my first Discovery and have found some helpful threads on here regarding what to look out for.
Luckily qualified for the 'jobkeeper' scheme and will put my money back into the economy via the hands of a land rover discovery owner

I am looking at a 2001 discovery td5 with 242000km on the clock.
Engine and turbo replaced at 225000km
Owner thinks there is either a transmission or oil leak
$3500

One of the better/more affordable looking vehicles in my budget of around $5-6k
Wondering how serious a transmission leak is and what I would be looking at to fix in the worst case scenario.
Any help appreciated.

Owner thinks there is either a transmission or oil leak

Danger Will Robinson, danger ! Does this mean there is fluid leaking from the bell housing ? If so it can be very expensive to repair. Either a leaking rear main engine seal or torque converter/ transmission input seal. Both require transmission removal to repair. Or it could just be a leaking rocker cover gasket with oil traveling down the rear of the engine and onto the bell housing which is a very simple and cheap repair. You really need more information to make an informed decision.

Can we assume it's an auto, as most are/were.

In addition to DeanoH ...

LT230 is a good transfer case, but is notorious for leaking after many kilometers.
They can leak at the layshaft o ring at the front of the case which is the most notorious spot.
Also leak from front and rear output flanges and also the 'sump' cover.
