    Manual to auto conversion (again)

I've started assembling everything to convert my Td5 manual to auto - my left knee just can't handle the clutch any more. I know it's not easy and it's expensive but I've done a lot to the car, it's relatively low mileage and I have its full background from new (I'm the 3rd owner). Buying a low mileage auto is (a) not easy as good ones are difficult to find and (b) they're becoming very expensive so that's not an option for me. Also I'd have to start from scratch with all the mods I've done to mine.

I'm planning to use the Ashcroft Compushift that they offer as part of their kit for the Defender conversion in order to get round the ECU and wiring loom problems. The Compushift is also programmable in various ways including TC lockup. I've acquired a full auto transmission, including transfer case, from a D2a which I'll have reconditioned.

There's only 2 things I'm not sure about, however. Firstly, I presume I'll need a new flywheel but does it have to come from an auto Td5 or will a solid flywheel from, say, a Defender do? I assume Deefers have solid flywheels as the Ashcroft kit makes no mention of the flywheel, only a new starter ring. Secondly, is a new pedal box required or can the hole for the clutch pedal simply be blanked off? Ashcroft offer a blanking plate for the Deefer pedal box and I can't see any reason the Disco would be different.

And, finally, thanks to everybody for the info on this subject from the forum.

All comments will be gratefully received.

You need a carrier, hub and flex plate, etc from an auto cos there is different setup than the manual flywheel which is designed to work with the clutch, parts shown here : Genuine Flywheel (2.5l 5 Cyl Turbo Diesel, automatic Transmission) For Land Rover Discovery 2 1998 - 2004 Classic | Jaguar Land Rover Classic Parts better get the HD flex plate from Ashcroft from the beginning
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned

As well as the above you will also need pedal set, NNN auto ECU, and if you don't want to cough up for compushift , the wiring loom and TCU .
I'm sure I have all that at home.
PM me if you want to take that path .
    Cheers

Edit : you'll need shifter and cable as well .

And if you source these second hand you need to make sure you use new bolts for bolting all this to the crankshaft.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Thanks Dave. We're getting some sunshine up in mid-western WA for the next couple of weeks. I'll get my teeth into it when we get back.
