    250CCA - 280CCA to crank start TD5 D2A?

It was always a story that people told me we need some of more than 600CCA to crank a TD5. I was using a 550CCA one with one click to start the TD5, so today I decided to give it another extreme test.

I checked my electric boat battery which is a very small Century EVERRIDE U1 MF 300CCA, it was only 280CCA available because I used the battery for a while already (this battery full charged would be real 330-350CCA).

Even I hardly made contact between the car terminals and battery because the battery has rectangular shape terminals, also had to put a small box underneath the battery because its very short.

It cranked 3 turns then fired up quickly at first key turn. THIS IS AFTER LEAVING THE CAR NOT RUNNING IN 3 DAYS, WITH VERY COLD NIGHTS 5-6 DEGREE IN SYDNEY.

BINGO! Now I can be confident to put this spare 300CCA in the cranking battery list for my TD5 2003.

Try yours and share at what lowest CCA you can get your car firing up.

Off topic, but what is the Konnwei device you are using to test the battery?

And one day it will not start first turn and then the drain will drop the volts so much that each attempt will be slower.

My friend who owns a D type replica and I went up to Wakefield Park last week to run the car around.

    It has a E type 3.8 with C type cams and 3 Weber 45DCOE.

He has this little 330CCA battery in it (which is the biggest he could find a place to fit) and in the cold it hardly would turn the car over. In fact it failed to start and we had to join a starting battery from his Mazda BT50 with the engine running to get it to crank and start in the cold, say 2C.

At times we had to push the car off compression for the starter to turn it even between races when it was warm.

Granted it is a bit of a dog to start and I don't know whether all this starter stalling has damaged it but the 330CCA battery is just pretty hopeless. The recommended battery for an XJ6 is 650CCA.

Just be aware that with a big voltage drop it is not doing your starter and solenoid any good.

IMHO a better solution for a diesel would be a Lithium jumper pack, aside from the practicality of humping an extra battery around. They give a big hit for a short time.
    Regards PhilipA

Why are you trying to use such a low powered battery to start a 5cyl diesel engine?

    Spot on.

Actually I do not intend to use this 300CCA for my car. Only this test to confirm if my TD5 is in good starting condition, and at what sort of CCA it would start. Seeing it turns easily and fire up at 280CCA after 3 cold nights, I would dare to say that even at 200CCA it would start.

While this test is quite useless in the city, it will be very helpful for me (and might be someone else) in a long or remote trip.
