Thread: CDL, is it worth it?

To reiterate a 2002 does NOT have the internals, selector shaft or even the spigot on the transfer case nose for a CDL.

All you need is the nose from an earlier transfer case to fit as it is all in the nose.

The linkages are the most expensive part.

Pricing would be at the upper end, I guess that includes labour, so that closes the gap.

I recently priced a transfer case , and they can be had from local wreckers for about $750 for a non leaking one, less if it needs seals.

As to whether it's worth it?

Mine have the cdl, one of them I never used to lock (just to see) and was amazed how far it could go without it, and on some pretty serious inclines etc... Take me anywhere I'm game to go.

Now the caveat:

If you go off-road with them in conditions where the centre diff is starting to work hard, and you don't lock it, you will damage the centre diff, and possibly the housing , but note, this is on the ones that have cdl , but aren't locked, I'm not actually aware of what would happen with the non lockable ones if you did this.

If it's the same,I would think it would be worth fitting just for that reason.

Thank you so much guys, I’m sold on the idea now. I can get a 2nd hand box for $750, I will get it reconditioned before the transplant. The more I drive this old girl the more I love it , even after getting out of a near new ranger or Toyota I carnt wait to get back in my discovery, so I think money will be well spent as I will be keeping the disco for as long as the wheels keep turning and the dreams keep churning.

A D2 without CDL is dangerous when attempting to reverse down a slippery slope due to the front wheels locking under slight brake application.

how about this as an alternative, wouldn't be able to manually lock it but will do the job and also eliminate any excessive free play

I'm a believer in both.
I really liked the way the Deefer drove, especially in dirt with the ATB in the centre, and the reduced driveline slack was lovely.

I have a spare t/case here with a CDL and it'll get a vacuum operated mechanism, although I have a T bar cable too.

Me too.


When our daughter lived out in the boonies access was by a dirt track, so when on that track when we visited I always used the CDL as the D1 always felt very stable especially when cornering & also loose stuff in the straight ahead. Speeds varied between 60 & 80kph.
