    Temperature gauge

I'm looking at buying a low mileage 2001 Td5 and I'm giving it a thorough check over on Friday. I drove it very briefly (about 3 minutes from cold) yesterday and there was a small red light at the top of the temperature gauge which stayed on. I've never seen this on my own Disco. Looking at the instrument panel on mine, I can see where the light is but, in the two years I've had it, I've never seen this light come on. Can anybody enlighten me as to what it means? Handbook is useless.

    Thanks

    Lawrence

It's been over heated that's that warning light, is the AC fan on all the time?

On my V8, that red light came on with coolant at 119°C.

Usually means the sender is out of range , especially if the gauge reads cold .
If the a/c fan isn't on as soon as you turn on ignition , then it shouldn't have been overheated unless the owner has reset the engine fault.
9 times out of 10 it's just the connector making a bad contact.
When you go for a longer test drive ,( to test torque converter lock up etc ) read the temp with your nanocom as well as seeing what the gauge is doing ( 70.5 degrees should take it to half way )

Thanks all. Aircon fan didn't come on with ignition and the owner wouldn't know how to reset a fault. We'll see how it goes when I give it a real inspection and a longer drive tomorrow.

    Cheers

Where is the needle of the gauge when the red light comes on, if the gauge reacts normally to coolant temp and goes to the middle when the engine warms up but the led is on the problem is with the instrument.

Thanks for advice all. No further info required as I've decided not to buy the vehicle for other reasons.

That's how it's made by LR, the gauge stays at the middle between 70 - 119°C then it goes up and red light comes on
